Help...WiFi heads...
In the last wifi discussion about setting up wifi hot spot, I realized how weak my laptop "Intel pro wireless card" is.
Last year at Serenada...my motorhome was parked 40 yards from Don's "2 Wire" transmitter. I could see it, but only made 1 very weak connection.
"Grouchy Granny" was parked next to me and bottle of wine later...I had a satellite connection. Now I was about 20' max, and I only had 2 bars, but
was able to connect nicely...
I do not want to setup a better system now (Have a 2 wire modem transmitter now) as I do not know what my needs will be in Baja when I settle down.
I want to increase my wifi ability...the pci mini express card now makes it difficult to remove the internal antenna wires and add a external antenna.
Looking for something for my MotorHome and portable enough to travel with in my back pack.
This is the only answer I have found with power, but cannot determine if it right for my Dell e1705:

I've posted this before. You can plug into the USB directly or use the cable it comes with to get a better shot at a WiFi sites. Only $45us at Fry's
sometimes $25 on sale. 10db gain. Lots of folks here have gone to it. Good luck!

Russ I went to Fry's yesterday to look at this...my Fry's in Concord did not have one I could find on the shelf...the "Helper" could not help. I was asking for airlink 101...correct? I could not find it for sale
on the net either. Must be doing something wrong

There is an alternative that works really well.
Linksys WUSB54G, also WUSB54GC.
Both remarkably simple to install and use.

Thank you much...but does not appear to have an external antenna
port...so I can upgrade the antenna when I settle in somewhere..

You simply need an RP-SMA pigtail to larger coax and that is connected to one of the small antennas on the router.
This is exactly the setup I have in place in the village where I live. The OMNI antenna way up on the roof is broadcasting signal for approximately
one mile with 3-5 bars.
A place called FAB-CORP can supply you with the external antenna, enough coax to run from the pigtail to the antenna, and the pigtail.

here is the package, put it together with a 12dBi OMNI and a long enough piece of COAX and you got your package. Be sure and get a bracket to hold
the OMNI antenna

Sorry, I do not understand...I do not have a router...2 Wire modem yes, but not hooked up as I now use an express card cell phone modem by Verizon.
That will not work in Baja.
Either of these...Linksys WUSB54G, also WUSB54GC... what you are referring to as a router? are there antenna ports I cannot see
If I install a modem after I settle in Baja I can attach a antenna for transmitting, but for now I want to find hotspots at RV parks like Serenada in
Mulege. When you park there (and other places) you get wifi...inside. I am only trying to upgrade my receiving power now

Well for reception only, the Linksys WUSB54G is adequate. It is its own antenna and uses a USB port to connect to the using computer.
The router I mention is for your longer ranging plans in Baja. Not intended for use you are describing for finding hotspots.
The router would be used more in a transmitting/receiving environment where you (or someone else) is being the provider of signal and hooked up to the
ISP being used.

hey AL all you need is a signal booster
for Diana's weak wi fi output. i found a bunch on ebay and was gonna buy one but i have DSL to my trailer now.
so here's a link to ebay search and there are lots of them. i like the $89 one and you could just rig up a mast on your RV and point it at the office.
