Note from former UT reporter Anna Cearley
Hello, everybody.
I just wanted to send this email to let you know that I have left The San Diego Union-Tribune after being based out of Tijuana for the past seven
years.
As some of you may know, the news business is facing increased economic pressures from a variety of factors, including competition from the Internet.
I accepted a voluntary buyout opportunity in December and have since started a master's program in new media communications at the University of
Southern California.
I am sad to be leaving my post, because it has been an amazing opportunity to get to know some fascinating people and to cover some incredible
stories. The UT gave me the chance to explore stories that showed how regular people live - such as the story of a grandmother who sold gum on a
Tijuana street corner - as well as to put a human face on the bigger problems of drug trafficking and corruption. These more indepth stories,
written in addition to the regular daily stuff, often took months to put together.
My colleague, Sandra Dibble, remains in Tijuana and I will be following her reports closely. After sharing a tiny office with her all these years, I
know her as a very conscientious and thorough reporter. I want to thank those of you who alerted me to newsworthy events going on in the peninsula,
and in helping me get in contact with people through these forums. I hope to keep in touch because the border is something that has become a part of
my life and I expect that to continue.
Sincerely,
Anna

Sorry to hear that. We found your stories interesting and informative, not only from a general perspective, but because they shed a light on many of
the issues personally affecting us. We wish you the best in your new challenges.

Don't know what it is but this place has a strong hold in m ost of us,could be beacuse we have the best of the two worlds. The commodoties of the
states, and the freedom to go where ever we want in Baja, not mentioning the ease to make quick trips. The people the food, the problems,we had learn
how to mix all of them, but now is getting out of hand, and people are leaving for ever.

Good luck, Anna, and thanks. These days, when I hear of a journalist leaving the "Mexico Beat," it often has a tragic ending. Not yours. Back to
school, that's very cool.

Anna,
We will miss your reporting. We wish you the best and hope you will find another interesting position after school.
Meantime, if your colleague, Sandra Dibble, wants to do an in depth story about Tijuana, she should meet and interview Fernando, the man who goes by
FDT on this board. He also has a computer radio show---web site is ultimatebaja
The Los Angeles Times did a story about Tijuana that included Fernando. He is a walking history book.
Just a suggestion --- opps, just had a better idea. Maybe you could do a special freelance article.
Good Luck
Diane and John

That's too bad
I find the San Diego Union-Tribune section on Tijuana/Border the best source of news for the area.
