Question about Tij-Cabo road trip
Hi all:
I'm planing a road trip from Tijuana to Cabo for the end of june. Basically I want to know about how much to expect in fuel, the current condition of
Hwy1, places to stop, etc.
Anybody has made the trip recently?

Gas in Baja is cheap, so plan on filling up in Ensenada because it's cheaper than closer to the border. Gas is abou $2.00 less than in the US. I don't
know if you are planning on going balls-out to Cabo, but two days is an easy drive. Plan on overnighting in Guerrero Negro. One word of caution...make
sure you gas up in El Rosario, just below San Quintin, because from there to Guerrero Negro it's about a tank full, and if you have a head wind,
you'll run out. Check the Nomad posts for road conditions and speed traps and pay close attention to the posts. If you leave TJ before 6 a.m.
(advisable because of Ensenada traffic), you should be able to make it to San Ignacio and stay at the Ignacio Inn B&B...cool place to sleep in
their yurts.
There are lots of gas stations after Guerrero Negro, and always pay in cash (US$ OK). Figure you'll have a little over four liters per gallon times
the number of gallons in your gas tank. I.E. when you buy 60 liters you will have bought a little over 15 gallons.
Enjoy the heat and humidity in Cabo and say hello to Sammy Hagar for me.

Forgot to tell you...
make sure you stop at the border for your FMT, or join the Discover Baja or Vagabundos Del Mar clubs and they will get it for you...nice convenience
factor. It's about $20.00 per person, and they will mail them to you before your trip.

I just made the trip from Tecate to Cabo earlier this week.
Here are some corrections to the posts above.
Gas is around $2.60 per gallon, but you don't always get as many liters as the pump says, so I figure in reality about $3.00 per gallon. The road is
in good shape the whole way. There are no speed traps, just slow down when going through the villages. Use common sense. Traffic on my trip was
very light.
Tourist visa is around $24.00 per person. Even if you purchase your visas in advance from one of the agencies suggested, you still have to stop at
the border at the immigration office to have it stamped and validated anyway, so I just purchase mine at the border.
Be sure your car registration, mexican insurance, passport, and tourist visa are up to date. You may be asked to produce them at one of the many
(about 8) military checkpoints along the way.
A new PEMEX station is under construction about halfway between El Rosario and Guerrero Negro. However, I estimate that it wont be done for several
months, so fill up in
El Rosario. The places where I fill up are about 4 hours and a little over 200 miles apart. They are - Ensenada, El Rosario, Guerrero Negro, Loreto,
and La Paz.
DO NOT DRIVE AT NIGHT!
Weather today in Los Cabos is lovely, warm but not hot. A little humidity but not bad. Evenings are luxurious.
Enjoy the drive, it is very scenic.

Returned a week ago...road is best ever!
We always fill up at Villa Jesus Maria about 20 miles north of Guerrero. Have not been happy with the station at the eagle
Never drive at night!
Watch your speed in the populated areas...I noticed an increased number of police at the side of the road this trip.
Have the passenger watch out for Topes.
Remember if injured in a traffic accident assistance can be miles and hours away and generally sub standard to American. We always have a first aid
kit in the truck.
Stop at Camalu say hi to Christina and do your self a favor get a Magnum bar-you will be plesantly surprised -see my post on the treat

Yes, I know what you mean. Since we generally stay in GN for the night, we fill up at the PEMEX in town, but I think they are probably owned by the
same guy with same meter manipulation.

Also Discover Baja which has their office just a mile off the Hwy 5 in the Pacific Beach area. They are actually about two miles to the east of the
5.
And they can make reservations and get 10% at the San Ignation Bed And Breakfast, which is a really great stop on your way down. It is the
first of the Baja Sur Oasis Pueblos.

Save yourself the hassle of "creative computations" to determine the exchange rate...always pay in pesos.
