La Paz Hotels!

We are not to far away from our long drive to La Paz! I have been online now for an hour and a half trying to find where we should stay. We don't need anything fancy, just a good clean room with an ocean view on the Malecon. You would think we could find a place for under $50 american? I seem to be finding the "Hotel Pekin" but can't find how much or how to get in touch to make a reservation. Anyone know of this place or have a recommendation?

Wow! $50 bucks and an ocean view! I'm thinking that's not going to happen. I think El Moro is $70 - $90. Good luck.

There is a little hotel that might be right for you. I can't remember the name but I think it is the 1st or 2nd block up from the Malecon on 5th of May street.
It was about $35 a few years back for a single.
If you get up on the 2nd or 3rd floor facing the street it has an excellent view of the bay.
There is only street parking.
I found it just walking around when I got to town.

Okay, I found it. Hotel Miramar: http://www.hotelmiramarlapaz.com/english/index.html

Single room $ 48 dlls 1 to 2 people, 1 Queen bed.
Double room $ 57 dlls 1 to 3 people, 2 Queen bed.
Triple room $ 64 dlls 1 to 4 people, 2 Queen bed & 1 Twin bed

Pearl,
I wouldn't worry too much about reservations this time of year. Should be able to find accomodations without any problem. However, be prepared for some higher prices for Malecon rooms. Those under $ 50.00 went out years ago.
Pekin is alright. Rooms pretty small and they don't have very many. Stayed there once and get what you pay for, I remember.
Have a nice trip, take pictures and give us a report.
Bien Viaje!!

no view and not on the malecon but

it's in the price range you want. Price also includes a breakfast of fruit, breads, juices, coffee, tea, etc. Nice couple, Milton and Susu, own and run the place. Does have secure inside parking and a pool. http://www.geocities.com/casabuenalapaz/index.html

The couple of times we've stayed in LP, this is where we've stayed. Rooms have been scrupulously clean; and everything else just works itself out in Baja fashion.

hey Pearl and Girl,
please let us know when you're on the road. There are nomads on both sides of the border who will be following your progress.

I really didn't mean to scare anyone with tales of driving in La Paz. If you want to stay outside of the city on the north side of the bay, there's a place to stay in the community of Comitan. Several nomads lived in or still live in that community. I'll send you a u2u.

We stayed in Pekin once. It is a quirky little hotel, I found it uniquely charming, our daughter thought it was creepy. Another bargain hotel that I like better is Lorimar (google lorimar la paz baja for a little more info), one block from the malecon on N. Bravo--no view. Baja bed and breakfast is great-- i/2 block form the plaza in a nice neighborhood and a few blocks from the water. Cecelia and Antonio, the owners are great people, know La Paz well, and are bilingual. There is a small pool and nice patio. The hosts don't hover like some Flathead B&B people do;) it's different down here. Call or email ahead as they aren't always there. On the malecon La Perla is a Baja classic, also the cabanas at Los Arcos-- link in next post. The malecon is pricy, but there is an intriguing little hotel called La Mision about 1 block north of La Perla. we keep meaning to check it out but we haven't yet.

losarcos.com is the address for hotel above.

All the pictures in the travel guides aside, you might want to reconsider about staying right on the malecon. The malecon is beautiful but it is also where the kids still cruise on Fri and Sat nights so you'll have trouble sleeping before 2:00 am. I don't rent my place but lots of my neighbors do and you might want to check out some of the condo's for rent in the area. Many of them are much cheaper than the local hotels. I'm not sure but I think many use vrbo.com (vacation rentals by owner).

We stayed at Los Arcos cabanas for 5 night last summer and loved it. More expensive, but right on the Malecon. It will be our hotel in La Paz from now on. Where ever you stay get a room as far from the pool as possible, way too noisy.

Actually we didn't see any critters at the Pekin:tumble:

I agree. The noise on the street can be a little on the high side with 'music' turned up to distortion levels. And I don't think the Midas franchise is very busy in La Paz.

I've stayed at Hotel Peking though it was years ago. The rooms were clean, I had an ocean view (from a side window), TV had a couple english channels. a/c and the best thing was a small frig to keep drinks cold. At that time it was around $30-$35.

Another place I have stayed is Hotel Gardenia. It's a few blocks up, much bigger rooms, no english on TV but there is a pool.

If you don't need to be in La Paz go to La Ventana and stay at Baja Joes. Great place right on the water.

When I had more money I stayed at the Hotel Miramar where you can dock your boat for Free while staying there.

The Lorimar is a nice, clean place just a block off the malecon. Miguel, the owner, speaks excellent English. They used to have some super cheap rooms that they has not renovated but they may have finished the renovation by now.
