We always cross at Tecate going all the way to Los Cabos. And despite what others on this forum have said, we have never had a problem in Tecate, but maybe we are just lucky. We will be crossing over going south sometime between Christmas and NY.

I think your projected speed, 50 to 60, is unrealistic. We drive without a trailer and average 50 overall. That means going 70+ out in the middle of nowhere. I would not do that with a trailer. I think your average is going to be closer to 45.

Dr. Tom, What do you mean by "too soon"?? Do you have a co-pilot, or others traveling with you? How about your thoughts on travel times by day, where to stop for the night, etc? Would that be a travel trailer? Some more info please Doc!

by too soon i mean, not leaving for 90+ days......my wife liz and my 2 dogs and a travel trailer and i suspect we'll average 50mph, maybe i go too fast on the straights, but okay with going slower....not in a hurry really. like to be moored for the evening before dark.....we probably make it to catavina the first nite then chill a bit after that....

We cross at Tecate around 0830. That puts us in at Guererro Negro about 1730. We leave GN about 0630 the next morning and into Los Cabos about 1830 that second day. That is averaging 50mph including short stops for fuel and eats.

Doctor. IF this is your first trip with this 'travel trailer' I'd like to suggest you take it to a brake shop & have the brakes checked for enough pads to make the trip safely. My brother & I towed down a 20' & a 31' Alfa Golds some years ago, and we installed larger axles before leaving to enable us to have "larger" brake shoes. I'
d even make sure that the towing vehicles brakes be checked also. Keep the trailer as "unloaded" as you can to keep the "load" reasonable. Be sure you've got plenty of rubber on the tires. (we bought new tires for the trailers). WE are leaving Phoenix area through Tecate around first part of November, headed to Cabo (in a car) with stops in Loreto for maybe a week. It's a great trip, and only way to go if your pullling a trailer is through Tecate. But I'm told there is a "kind of hidden" stop sign somewhere after you start out of downtown going south, that gets many tourists. Anyone be able to describe exactly where this one is?????

Yes, there is but it is hard to explain where it is. It is there, but way off to the right side of the road, way off where you might not be looking. The thing that is tricky is that none of the Mexicans stop there and you think you are just going with the flow of traffic. We have always stopped to the annoyance of the locals. But we have never been pulled over by the Policia either.

this will be our 2nd trip with the travel trailer. on the first trip on the way back, one axle was out of alignment and virtually ate the rubber off the tires. we stopped at this great place in redding ca. ....all wheel alignment, and had it fixed. they were great. No, the worst thing we encountered was an unmarked speed bump somewhere before constitution, that kicks your ass. on the way back we did the tj border with the trailer and i swear that scene was something out of blade runner....what a freak show. i like crossing at tecate....i just go slow, dont let anything distract me and watch like a hawk.

All I can say is how jealous I am that it's those of you heading South for the winter while some of us are stuck up North in the cold. When we moved to Ensenada, we cross at Tecate with all our "stuff" so it holds a very special place in our hearts. We spent the day at the border trying to convince them to let us go - it took lots of patience on our part and a few extra dollars to get it done but we finally headed out of there. Much easier than Otay at the time.

Can't even imagine how wonderful it would be to spend the winter months in Los Cabos. Just a few more years of the grind (well, after this week on Wall Street, make that a few more years plus!!) and hopefully we'll be talking about our trip South.

Enjoy.

Dr Tom,

I have posted that we would be interested in a caravan of sorts from the border to at least Gro.Neg., during the first week or so of Jan, (I am one of those that Dennis does'nt know) We will be staying outside of Tecate and could meet up in town on the AM of departure day. Thought of a long day to Gro. Neg. but if we had company we could chill. Our ultimate goal of a caravan may be as far as Loreto or Insurgentes. Check my posts or u2u me for more info, if interested.

Yes, the winters are wonderful in Los Cabos and La Paz. It's kind of funny, but we are becoming so acclimatized to the summer weather that at times we wish the winters were a bit warmer! It does get down to the high 50's at night in January,,,,,brrrrrrrr! The summer is our favorite season with a little bit of rain, warm ocean water, fabulous sunsets, and not too many people around. But it is all good.

Dr Tom
Have you decided when you will be crossing the Border?
This will be our 1st trip down there and we plan to leave in January as soon as I get the truck checked out and packed. The wife and I would like to convoy with others. Safety in numbers.
Have a good day
John
