Canon de Guadalupe
Hello everyone,
First I'd like to say that the information on this board is very useful to those like myself, who although have roots in Mexico, and have travelled
through much of its states, can benefit from up to date information on places already covered, or places in baja yet to explore.
With that intro out of the way, what is the status on Canon de Guadalupe? I am planning a family camping trip to San Felipe this Thanksgiving weekend
and was wanting to spend Thanksgiving day in Guadalupe Canyon, the Fri or Saturday in San felipe.
I emailed Rob from www.guadalupe-canyon.com/ who said all camps booked from thanksgiving thru the weekend....
Any other campos nearby where I can pitch a tent?
I am willing to make the drive if it is the case, if not, just drive to Felipe and look for a descent campo, set up camp, and enjoy....
FWI, I have a 4WD vehicle, so I can make most roads I need to take to get there..(guadalupe)

Go to the Nomad Baja Trip Reports Forum... We were there 3 weeks ago.
Generally we go about 2 times a year and always stay at Arturo's with a reservation through Canyonman Rob.
Yes, there is a campo just above Arturo's, but all the palapas there burned in the fire of last December... I didn't notice much new there. On the
left side of the canyon they have been rebuilding palapas since the fire... However, not much privacy anyplace but Arturo's.

El Palomar canyon (with hotsprings), and other canyons all along the Sierra Juarez foothills for general camping, hiking. Palms, pictographs,
streams. Maybe you can spend a part of the day at Guadalupe for the hotsprings and camp elsewhere, then move on to San Felipe. Or go directly to San
Felipe, stopping at the marina for shrimp (!), then go to Matomi Canyon and overnight there. Streams and pools there (not hotsprings). Or you could
camp at Agua Caliente outside of Ensenada (off Mex. 3) for hotspring pool, and then on to San Felipe. (??)

Or the hot spring in Agua Caliente canyon... southwest from San Felipe/ north of Matomi...

Cool Thanks, Do you have any GPS Waypoints for places around Palomar Canyon? FYI, I am crossing thru Mexicali, which is the border crossing closest to
me.
How Far is Matomi Canyon from San Felipe?

Thanks David, it sounds like as long as the other campo is open, I don't need a palapa to set up camp. I just need access to the hot springs so we can
take advantage of the warm waters...
I am thinking it is worth a shot, drive into the Canyon, enjoy the hot springs, then find a place to set up camp....

Hi again Latino Guy and welcome to Nomad.
There is a ton and a half of details to be found here... many that you seek are in the Trip Reports forum. Use the Nomad search (at the top left of
the page) to find info here. You don't need anything more than the subject or the Nomad's name who posted... but not both unless you want to narrow
down the search.
On my web site is a ton of info too... either in my trip pages or in the many links to other Baja web sites.
My map of Valle Chico & Matomi has milages on it.
There are 2 main ways to get to Matomi...
1) From the north, west of San Felipe, then south down Valle Chico (the fastest route). 64 miles from Hwy. 5, about 5 miles north of San Felipe
(signed Col. Morelia) at the self-storage building.
2) From the Puertecitos highway, 10 miles north of Puertecitos/ 45 miles south of San Felipe, then up Arroyo Matomi 34 miles. That's 79 miles from
town to Rancho Matomi.
You could go in from the north and exit out towards Puertecitos, all new driving. My recommendation.

Here is the overall San Felipe-Puertecitos area on a 1975 map with my addition of the new highway and Valle Chico, Matomi roads:
Here is the Matomi region (up to Agua Caliente Canyon Hot Spring) and out to the gulf on a 2003 topo map with my road notes added:
This map also helps you to find the canyons north of Matomi: Parral (end of 3.6 mile road), Berrendo (end of 3.0 mile road), Carrizo (end of 2.8 mile
road), Agua Caliente (end of 3.9 mile road).

Latino Guy Palomar canyon is 30 miles past Guadalupe canyon going south towards San Felipe Via Laguna Salada, here is the lik from my trip.
