Lots of bicyclists...

I passed at least 20 bicycles on this trip from Tecate to the Los Barriles area.

I have never seen so many serious bike-trippers with large panniers on Hwy 1 in my life.

Made me feel downright fat....

I passed a group headed towards Mexicali on the toll road from Tecate last year. There were at least 50+ riders..

Good for them. I like to mountain bike and stay away from the cages.. but that is just me. I dont ride much anymore; but, the adventures some find on two wheel are amazing and it really shows what willpower can do. It is inspiring.

Yeah, there are a lot of anti-bike people.. It's been covered in other threads.. so lets keep it there please.

It's good to see people out there taking on the world mano a mano. Nothing is more raw and real than the ground 3 feet from you while you power yourself across it with your own energy. The world can be conquered..just keep pedaling..

Gee, it is good to have a new moderator.:rolleyes:

But then again, you know that someone like me is anti-bike and have not been on a bike since the age of 12---other thread. So a moderator who knows about everyone! What more could we want. :dudette:

Even my son who has been an avid bike rider---road and mountain won't ride down Baja, and he loves Baja. He road raced in college, has done the Oregon/California Highway 1, the Eastern Sierra Death Race, and the Rosarito Encenada race etc., ---all things I very much supported.

But Baja Highway 1----as he says, he is not suicidal and he agrees that it endangers too many other people. Now taking his mountain bike into the back country of Baja, that is a different story.

Your statement anti-bike people is a sweeping generalization, and your attempt to be moderator was, well, a real statement of if you don't agree with me, stay quiet. JMHO

Inspiring? Yes, I was inspired by one rider we met on the back roads---mountain bike rider from Europe out riding the back roads of Baja----he was not endangering the lives of others, including the truck drivers who make their living driving that road.

Also very inspired by the local Mountain Bike Club we help support in Baja---hard working people without much money, but lots of heart, very competitive, and they also dislike bike riders on Highway 1 because it is dangerous for everyone.

Those bike riders that are so inspiring to you are a menace not just for gringo tourists and residents, they are a menace to the hard working pepople who have to drive the highway to make a living.

Thank you Diane, We also have bikes and rode a lot at one time. What could we be disliking a bike rider for? We don't horse back ride anymore either but sure don't dislike them either. Riding a bike on highway 1 endangers others lives which I think they have no right to do!

One of the things I love about Baja is the freedom to live your life on your terms. If you want to ride your bike down the highway so be it If the guy speeding down the same Highway pushes you off or takes you out, you knew the risks.
For the most part the car and rider interaction is very short and for the most part safe.
I can't think of anything more boring that riding the Hwy. but defend a persons right to do so.
No one seams to have issues about the 1k or prerunners speeding down those dirt roads at 90 miles per hour, we think is all good fun. What would happen if a bike and prerunner met on a dirt road? As much as I hate to admit it, it is getting very hard spell adventure with a capitol A in Baja. For those of us that try, we accept the risk.

Mango,
I don't think the point regarding bicycling on Hwy 1 was anti-cyclists, but rather was one of risk vs safety for all folks concerned...cyclists and motorists.

The concerns expressed seemed mostly to encourage enjoyable and challenging cycling in a way that did not place cyclists or others at unnecessary risk.

I also think vacationing motorists dragging trailers that are too wide or have extended side mirrors place others at risk, especially when they may not be used to driving vehicles without such extensions....the point made was one of safety and consideration of others.

Ya pay yer money and ya take yer chances....
