Information Needed

We are headed to Baja in a week and I'm geting everything packed and my bride asked a great question ( that I can't answer ) so I come to my new favorite site.

Is it legal for us to bring our taser and pepper spray into Baja?

Is it legal to run a red light? Yes, but.....Are you driving or flying?

Gee, not sure if it is legal but we certainly came into Mexico with pepper spray (only remembered we had it when we were cleaning out the van) as my husband has it stocked for those fishing trips up north when he is hiking with his belly boat! We have it for big bears... not nasty people!

:lol::lol:

Don't know but if anyone knows where I could by some in La Paz I would love to know! I hate it when the dogs chase after me when I am on my bicycle. They are annoying and I bet they would like me for lunch!

I've never had a problem with pepper spray and I don't hide it. I'd leave "ol' sparky" at home.

You never know who you are going to encounter. I remember having to run around at the last moment and check a Makita screwdriver at the Salt Lake City airport. The reason? "It's called a screw GUN, isn't it?"

Had the same problem in Loreto with a bunch of dogs that would ambush me at the same corner every morning. One shot of pepper spray one day and the next day they all just watched me go by!:lol:

I would leave the Taser home. Don't know if the pepper spray is legal and you probably won't find out till after you actually have to use it. We have the small variety on all our keyrings. Fry's sold them cheap a few years ago. No idea if they work. Thusfar haven't found any volunteers to try it on.
In my estimation, most of that stuff is useless anyway, unless you get sufficient advance warning, which very seldom is the case.

That's exactly what I need! A friend of ours who is here on her sailboat was actually attacked and bitten by a pack of dogs while jogging, luckily some neighbors came to her rescue.

I try to remember to hide the pepper spray and stun gun in the camper before we hit the army checkpoints- I used to be worried we'd get hauled away for having weapons (still don't know if they're illegal or not).

The times I've forgotten to put them away the soldiers have ignored even the the law enforcement strength cannisters of pepper spray.

One time a soldier came across the stun gun and called his sunglass-wearing jefe in to the camper- oh crap! He just winked, gave my husband a thumb's up, and said something like "very smart".

Now I'm more worried that a young soldier will goof around and zap himself with 50,000 mega-somethings so I still try to keep them out of sight.

I had some bad experiences with packs of wild dogs years ago and I still freeze when I see a group of dogs no matter how friendly. I haven't ridden my bike in to town since my neighbor had a pit bull take a chunk out of her calf while she rode thru San Juanico.

Watching as a pack of dogs corraled a poor cow and chased it on to the rocky beach then a particularly viscous one grabbing it by the neck in the shallow water til it drowned is a bit of nature I'd wish I hadn't witnessed.

Luckily San Juanico is still small enough that when I do have to ride my moto in to town, I can go WAY around via the back roads on the outskirts. I love to see coyotes but I'm petrified of dogs. duh, instead of letting my pepper sprays expire I'll start carrying one with me.

I've always order the spray online so I'm not sure where you would purchase it lingi.

When we are carrying something (pepper spray, taser, etc.) we do not want the checkpoint guys to see I simply put it in my pocket and step out of the truck and let them search away.

Any reputable PEPPER SPRAY works on bears, and I know, people too.

The old style (nor sure if even exists anymore) MACE just infuriates bears, but works pretty good on "normal" people.

I was the "bear management officer" for Glacier National Park in my late youth------we always carried .41 Magnum side arms as insurance, tho.

(I always liked "insurance")

Yep-----hang on to that "late youth" stage as long as possible-----------for me I have entered the "old" stage, but God willing not "decrepid" quite yet.

1969 was when I was in Glacier------great times!! (but not with the bears)

My wife is constantly amazed that they never check her very large bag in which we keep all our valuable papers etc as we drive up the peninsular. Were we out of our minds, and wanting to carry drugs, guns or other prohibited products (such as pork into the US), it occurs to us that this would be an ideal mechanism for transport.

Except that it is already full

Glacier National Park....them is Brown Bears right? I fished Alaska with a friend who packed a 44 Mag., and told him with my speed he could mess with the bear....I'm gone. He said the 44 was so he could shot me in the leg, while he made his exit. Nothing like fishing with good friends.

My daughter carries pepper spray, but am thinking of getting her a taser. Any good brands, or features that I need to know about?

According to Yahoo Answers, it's ok to carry Pepper Spray for use as a self defense item, but if you're caught using it while intoxicated, it's a felony. Yikes!

The taser is illegal. Plus, the thought of a soldier at a check-point accidently tazing himself, as mentioned by Oladulce, is frightening! (though it does present an amusing mental image :D)

Forget about the danger and think of the fun.

Grizzley and black-------black were a nuisance, and the griz were worriesome, and spooky---------it was the griz. that we were most concerned about, tho a black bear also (such as when in a trap) can be an angry sob's to mess with. I tranquilized them all------which meant they could not move, but were fully awake and angry------always worried that they might have a good memory. :o

----but, I am taking this thread off subject----sorry.

One always needs to be careful when carrying possibly questionable items. A few years ago, my daughter and her husband were in a military check point near Rosarito while driving back from Abreojos, when a guy spotted a paring knife she used to peel fruit. He claimed it was an illegal weapon. She got shaken down for the last cash they had on them. Probably could have avoided this, but it was late and they were young and feeling intimidated.
