I-5 thru So Cal on New Years Day?
I'll be driving south on I-5 on the 1st and will hit LA about noon - I'm hoping everyone will be watching football. What's traffic likely to be at
that time?

Won't be any.
Rose Bowl and Parade will empty the 5 for most of the day.

New Year's day traffic will be extremely light. The only slight traffic delay will be between Dodger stadium and the 5/710 interchanges. Just too many
vehicles for the number of lanes available.

I wouldn't make any predictions. I have relatives in Encinitas and I am in Anaheim. Sometimes it takes 45 minutes. However, this past Thanksgiving
Day, it took me four and a half hours to get from Anaheim to Ensenada, leaving at 1:30 in ther afternoon. And, there were no known accidents. I
figured, a la the football thing, that everyone would be eating dinner with their family. traffic just slammed shut a couple of miles North of the
I-5/ 405 junction. If I had known what I was in for, I could have probably saved an hour if I took the San Joaquin Toll Road. (Route 73). Would still
have had stp and go from Capistrano to past Oceanside. Good luck, Santiago.

I keep this number programed on my phone
1-800.427.7623 it is the caltrans number for up to date highway conditions.
Normally coming through LA we would take the 210 and head for the 15, but not on New Years---takes one through Pasadena and Arcadia---not a good idea
on New Years.
From past experience, I would think a direct route on the 5 should not be too bad, but we always call along the way---lots of alternate routes.
Good luck

Good points by all.
You should have no problems on Jan 1 mid-day transiting thru LA on the 5, unless there is an accident.
KFWB 980 traffic reports on the one's
KNX 1070 traffic reports on the five's
Set your AM dial and toggle between the two and make a decision whether to take the 405 split in Sylmar. This route may be preferable as it has more
carpool lane and bypasses the 5/134/210/7 area completely.
People leaving the Rose Parade start hitting the freeways around 10:30 but they will be heading away from Pasadena. Those of us attending the game
will already be parked at the Rose Bowl and sipping mimosas (fresh squeezed California oranges of course) and Sangre de Marias (clamato and 100% blue
agave juice of course) eating caviar (farm raised of course) and firing up the grill for carne asada tacos made from grass fed beef (of course) with
fresh guacamole made from California avocados (of course) and homemade tortillas (of course) and fresh salsa made from our homegrown tomatoes and
chili's (of course) and......I digress.
The new beta sigalert website works great with an iPhone I use it all the time as I drive for a living.
FYI - mileage from 5/405 split Sylmar to 5/405 split Lake Forest via 5 = 66.5 miles via 405 = 74.2 miles mas or menos. Your mileage may vary, but
only slightly.
Have fun, drive safe and Happy New Year!

You might want to try another Route. If Pasadena 210 is loaded up take a left Turn at Bakersield to Kramer Junction, then South to 15 direct into
Ramona and across at Tecate. Went that way for years- Few miles further but no Traffic to speak of.
Good luck

My ex-wife reports she was held up for 40 min. at 'KRAMER'S CORNER over the Thanksgiving weekend---------it was a mad house and nobody directing
traffic. She was coming south from Owens Valley.

That used to be a good dodge but now it's chock-a-block all the damn way. And anyway, I'll be carrying 3 rookie college students from UC Berkeley so
I think it's wise to avoid Bakersfield all together. Baja will be cultural shock enough.
