Hope that is the right part. If so, PLEASE LET THE REST OF US PSD OWNERS KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS. If there is a ten dollar part that I should carry, I want to know about it.

Also, it is smart to carry a backup CPS (cam position sensor) with you. I saw them available at AutoZone for under 5.00. I know you said yours was replaced but at the time that Ford finally issued a recall on the CPS (2007, I think), FORD WAS SHIPPING FAULTY REPLACEMENTS TO DEALERS FOR AWHILE. There is a chance you might have gotten one through this avenue or even through an aftermarket source. If this delivered part doesnt work, see if you can scrounge up a CPS.

I actually carry two in case I come across someone on the road. Once upon a time these were actually being sold for around 100.00.

I'm sure glad I have the V10 in my Excursion! My brother and nephew have both been stranded with their 6.0 diesels.

The V10 has never had a problem and never has been to the dealer! It may not get the mileage of a diesel but the Excursion has a 44 gallon fuel tank and the mileage is between 12 and 14mpg.

As you have heard, FDT was amazing in offering to help, sourcing the part and getting it on the bus to El Rosario.
Unfortunately. the mechanic -me- had the diagnosis wrong.

Funny things happpen ....
As we looked into things further and with more help from another diesel owner, I found another plug that was detached.
Having recently paid my Ford dealer to replace an alternator and belt, they apparently missed reconnecting this plug - the temp sensor that tells the thermostat what to do.
Now things are starting to make sense.
The truck overheated about a week ago for no reason - now I know the reason.
The overheating appears to have fried the cam shaft sensor.
Having talked to three mechanics in the states and a few Ford diesel owners who passed through - we think this is it !!
I managed to find a mechanic who with his small hands and my tools managed to get the old sensor out without taking anything apart - Ford says strip the belt and radiator to get at it !!
Tomorrow at 10 am the new one should arrive at the autopartes Mesa.
We will remain safe - and getting bored - in El Rosario at Bajacactus.

Oh and by the way, the 04 and later 6 liters do not normally have a cam shaft sensor problem.
The newer 7.3 owners should carry a spare sensor with them because it goes often in the 7.3.
I am thinking of rebuilding my 94 F250 with 7.3 and little electronics !!

You probably don't need my advice on any of this. But if you could somehow get the wife and kids to asuncion while this whole truck thing is resolved they won't have to miss out on their vacation as well. This may all resolve itself this afternoon, or it may go on.

Typical mfgr suggestion on removing a part; maximize the labor time. While those can be a byatch to remove, it shouldnt necessitate removing the radiator and belts.

My first thought was to save all your reciepts for the $$$$ you spent on hotel, food, parts, etc. and present them for reimbursement to your Ford dealer. Their mistake should pay for your losses. In the real world that probably can't happen, but the Scorpio in me would want to go get 'em!

I also second Igor's idea regarding sending the family ahead. :yes: They'll have a fun experience, that is unless they have to get back for school. :(

Happy to report that the Diver family is doing well and holding up quite well--making the best of the situation.

Spirits seem high, youngest diver found a playmate, and they have a great room.

We stopped and visited with them a little earlier on our way to San Quintin.

We had hoped to visit with our BA neighbors in BA, but it was good to see them under any circumstances. Shoot they even had a really nice xmas present for us.

Some neighbors---when they visit for dinner, they bring the food, cook the dinner and clean up the mess---then they bring us a Christmas present. OK, Diver, I will try sushi again. :lol:

Sure hope all works well tomorrow!

Ford is probably basing it on someone with big mechanics hands. But as Diver said small hands can do it. I helped a friend change one in Catavina at the south water crossing. His son had small hands and we had it changed in no time. He had seen a FORD bulletin on the sensor so he had a spare with him when it quit running.

No problems with my fuel pumps so far, BOB. :lol:

Of course, a disconnected cable by a repair guy and all bets are off.:wow: This is the single biggest reason I like to do work on my truck myself.

I got to thinking about that disconnected cable, Diver. I'm not understanding how this could raise engine temps through information sent to/from the thermostat. THERMOSTATS ARE GENERALLY NOT ELECTRONIC DEVICES. THEY OPEN WHEN THE COOLANT TEMP REACHES A CERTAIN TEMP. I assume they do this by the characteristics of the materials they are composed of. I highly suggest you drive around close to ER for a good hour to get the temps back up (not just at idle) and see what happens. WAS THE THERMOSTAT REPLACED WHEN THIS OVERHEATING INCIDENT OCCURRED? IS IT POSSIBLE THAT YOUR RUN TO ER AND THE OVERHEATING INCIDENT WERE THE TWO HOTTEST/HARDEST THINGS YOU'VE ASKED YOUR TRUCK TO DO IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS?

I have to be honest, I've put far more money into my truck ('99 Ford F250 diesel) lately than I care to admit, but then again it has nearly 200,000 miles on it. The wear and tear is starting to show.... the thing has thousands of Baja miles under the hood. I'm currently looking for a new "ride." But.... that said, I do carry a full tool box, spare hoses, belts, a spare CPS, etc.... I believe in self-sufficient travel in case the "sh*t hits the fan."
