Still Stranded and Want to go HOME

Thought I'd start a new thread just to make sure the message gets out instewad of buried in the original post.

Bajagringo showed up with the new part yesterday afternoon and we got it instaqlled with the help of the ocal mechanic. I am glad to say that Bajagringo looks nothing like his mug shot !!

Unfortunately the part did not fix the problem - strike 3 or 4 or 5 !!

We are now giving up on trying to fix the truck and are looking for ways to get back to the US with the truck and trailer, wife, 2 kids and 2 dogs.

We have received some very generous offers for rides and towing and I guess it's time to call in all offers. Our Telcel number in Baja is 616-163-9450 and I will check the board again in an hour or so. We cannot access email from this computer so Nomads is all we have.

If nothing works out by later today, we will call Abe's towing in TJ and see if they'll come get us.

Thanks for all the suggestions, support etc.

Diver-wish I could drive down and help out but Tracy and I have certification exams tomorrow. If you need anything once you get to SD, please let me know. Also, not to make matters worse but I saw on the news last night that parts of I-5 in Washington are closed due to flooding.

The good news it that it's supposed to be in the upper 70s to low 80s here this weekend.

Driver, I am a retired oilburner mechanic that used to work on over the road rigs up until last year. What year is your truck. While many here have posted about the use of Mexican diesel in late model trucks,Its been my experience that the V8 diesels have a harder time with the particulate filter and the symptoms that go with that problem. The dodge trucks do not seem to be having trouble with this.
First, get under your truck with tools and unbolt the exhaust pipe leading to to particulate filter . Just open it up enough to get some exhaust gas around it. When the filter plugs up,a couple of things happen. You will lose power and and your truck overheats. Its a little like when your Cat Converter fails in a gas power vehicle.
Now after you has opened up the exhaust , you will be able to eliminate the particulate filter as the culprit. I have done this to a ford in LaPaz last year and he was able to limp home after doing it. If your truck starts to run after this effort. It will run a little louder than normal but it will not cause any damage.

The problem with these new fuel systems such as the high pressure common rail and electronic injectors is its getting harder to diagnose problems in the middle of no where. In the old days we needed compression, air, fuel and we could get any deisel to run.Now its a electronic guessing game.
I am sorry to hear about your problem but I think what I have told will help.

Good luck to you.

I still think it's a fuel related problem. Does it start at all? Can you check to see if the fuel pump is actually working? What kind of fuel pressure do you have at the fuel manifold when cranking the engine, and what is it when it does start?? Have you eliminated the fuel system as the prob? Did you replace that noisy relay? What relay was buzzing? Just some last minute thoughts. Sorry about your mess.

I didn't see your post Terry, good ideas!

Diver,
If for some reason you end up needing anything else from the U.S. before you head home let us know. Jim and I will be driving by there on Tuesday on our way to Asuncion. Sounds like you should be on your way back home by then. Lauri

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Phone calls and more phone calls ....

Trotters are coming down to pick up the family and the dogs.
Another wonderful offer has come to trailer the truck back to SD.
Now we need to get the camp trailer back to the US and not quite sure how that will happen yet.

If anyone is heading north soon with an empty trailer hitch ....
It's a 21 foot Prowler LT and is very light for it's size.
A friend pulls his with a V8 Explorer so any 1/2 ton or whatever will work.

I'd leave the trailer here except that it will make a handy place for us to live while the the truck is getting fixed and I-5 is drying out.
Worst case, I will drive back after the truck is fixed and hope the trailer and contents are still all there ???

Deb, we are 1 hour east of Portland and 3 miles north of the Columbia River. I-5 to I-84 to the Hood River bridge...

We've checked fuel pump and fuel filters and cam sensors and fuel lines and air filters and ....
It's got to be the computer thingy !!

Thank you again for all the kind words and offers.
Please excuse me not returning all the wonderful U2's I've gotten but I will.

Any trailer towers out there ??? :?:

We are leaving San Diego Sat a.m. for La Paz (which could be bumped to Sunday if required). Consider this a last parts purchase/transport option - be happy to help and know the local Ford dealer locations from bitter experience.

Number in San Diego (actually Cardiff) is 760-944-1695 (John will answer - my own Telcel naturally doesn't work here).

Email is wahoo123@starband.net - will be home tonight packing, not carousing.

oh my...bajagringo is busted...when we had a blind meeting, I was looking for that hunky prison guy too...jejejejje

well Diver...soooo sorry for your problemas. If it's any consolation...juan didn't catch a bunch of fish today...just some bonita and a yellowtail...no tuna around. Our Suburban has been at three different mechanics for nearly 8 months now...like you we have replaced lots of parts and no go....crap

Way to go nomads for helping out ...baja gringo is a gentleman indeed and well done John and Diane for rescueing Pam and the kids...drive carefully and have a safe trip.

Sharks,
That is just too funny. Really creative and a great comic relief.

We are now at Jardins in San Quintin and just talked with Diver. We think we have all the logistics worked out for in the morning. Broke our rule and drove some after dark. opps

Well, we love this place and are glad to be here---headed out for dinner soon. Carmen, the owner laughed because she knows we will keep coming back, but since we were here on Monday, she did not expect us so soon.

Always good to be in Baja
