wheelchair accessible accommodations in BCS
We're planning a trip down with my dad in a wheelchair and we could use help finding accessible places to stay in La Paz , Loreto, Mulege and Jose del
Cabo. We need the doors to be 32 inches minimum and in the bathroom we need enough room to bring the chair next to the toilet so he can transfer
himself. A few steps to the room isn't a big deal, one into the bathroom is a pain but can be managed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a tall order for Mexico. Speaking from personal experience, here's what I would suggest:
Bring a transport chair. They are not as wide as wheelchairs and thus are easier to get your dad around in through the doorways, etc. Check out
"Roll Easy Transport Chair" at your local medical supply store. They are pretty durable for down here. Mexicana Airlines does not charge extra for
handicapp devices. Our condo complex does have some units available for rent, but the bathroom doorways are 30". While the extra wide transport
chair does fit through the doorways, there is no space to slide it "next to" the toliet. I provide assistance for this maneuver. If you need

we have the room here in mulege

doors are 32 inches
bathroom is BIG
and transfer is easy
the toilets are NOT the higher handicapped style though
there would be a little bump over the door sills
but the french doors will open WIDE
but there is a ramp to the parking and beach
i've never seen a handicapped room in baja

Gotta believe this a good bet for Mulege. As for the other suggested stops, you might try checking websites for hotels with international affiliation.
They are more likely to meet or come close to U.S. codes.

Just Googled "hotels Loreto handicapped". Looks like there are at least five that meet the requirements. Try it for the other towns.

Thanks for the replies. My parents have done alot of world travelling and they aren't expecting US standards. I know dad can handle Baja no problem.
I'm so excited for them to see Baja. We are looking at La Perla for La Paz and Bob & Susan I will be contacting you soon. We are only looking for
quick overnight stays in Loreto and Jose del Cabo (airport) and could give up some comforts here.

Last time I checked, there wasn't anything in the way of overnight accomodations close to the San Jose Airport. I'd suggest that you look for
something at the South end of the toll road that runs from San Jose to the airport. Such as the Best Western Posada Real.

Loreto suggestion
As I recall when staying at the Iguana Inn, a wheelchair would work. Shoot a note to Julie there and ask about this-

Well,
If you two remember, when you get to Bahia Asuncion, you should have no problems downtown. The sidewalks have the appropriate access.
The planning was, well, just a little off.

I researched the web for hotel sites that provided handicapped facilities, but as I looked at some of the hotel web sites, I started to wonder if
there wasn't some that were not truly forthcoming. Some hotels would include a line such as "Handicapped facilities." Maybe I'm a skeptic, but for
some reason, I thought that maybe some properties might have a restroom in their restaurant that was designed to meet handicapped needs. Thus, the
rest of the property would not provide the needed facilities. Basically, i'd advise anyone in need of such facilities to call the properties directly
to ensure they won't have an unpleasant surprise on arrival.

Great advice Bajahowodd. My parents have traveled all over the world have come across that sitiuation more then once. I think there most memorable
was in the middle of nowhere in the Australian outback. Doors weren't big enough and a flight of stairs to the room. All this after numerous calls
promising a handicapped room. Luckily they had strong guides and a sense of humor.
Diane- Some of those ramps are pretty comical as they have poles right in the middle of them. It's the thought that counts.
