Could be just a lot of markup or it could be quality. Check to see the glass brand and country of origin. Most of the glass from China is of inferior quality and cheaper. Brands like PPG, Safelite, Carlite, Pilkington and Guardian are considered premium brands and factory glass equivalent or even better. The Chinese glass will come under some other obscure name. Just check to see where it was from and what your quality needs are vs budget.

Also check to see if they are quoting you based on using a new seal or re-using the old one...

Kate,

A few years ago I had a quote from the shop on Abosolo for my 02 Corrola, and they wanted $ 650.00 (yeah, dollars) for a windshield. I ended up having a friend bring one down ($ 125.00) and had it installed for $ 50.00 here in Loreto. Those installation cost way high. In Ca. they do that job in your driveway in 20 minutes. 1100 pesos seems awful cheap though ($77.00) and makes me question the quality. 3300 pesos sounds more like the norm.($230.00)

I think my photographic memory ran out of film

The problem I have had with the cheap China glass is that the few times I have tried going the cheaper route I found that they did not fit and seal as well as the better glass. If this is a simple line with no curve, perhaps it won't be a big deal.

Thanks for the vote on my avatar - that's three thumbs up and one down so far...

Kate,
At second thought, maybe you should go with the 1100 peso one. Forgot to realize the age of the vehicle. And since this is La Paz, the seal is really of minor importance. Not like you'll flood out of the thing anytime soon.:P:biggrin:

That is a very good installed price with a new seal. One of my clients is in auto glass and I have learned a lot about the trade. That equals their cost on about the cheapest piece of China glass they can get so you "done good!"

A little late since you already replaced the windshield, but could the difference in price be the difference between safety glass and regular glass?

Crinamex is one of the great deals here. We have had two windshields replaced and were amazed at the prices. One we had just had an estimate made in the states and saved $100 here.
I believe that they are all safety glass.
