exchange rate
with the very favorable exchange rate--$1 US buys nearly $15 MEX
does anyone have any RECENT information about what shops, restaurants, etc. are giving for US $ ?
(I know I am better off in pesos) but inquiring minds want to know

we were in San Felipe yesterday --
several had signs saying 12 to 1, and one place had a sign $1.50 or 15 pesos on one item.
We exchanged at the bank at 14.69 ---

The day before valentines we exchanged dollars for pesos before crossing into Tiajuna, I got 13.39. In San Quintin the banks weren't buying dollars.
After two days in San Quintin we went to Ensenada. While there Costco was giving 14.45 if you use dollars. My question is are the banks buying dollars
in Ensenada? If they are I should have waited to exchange my dollars in Ensenada. If they are buying dollars, do they charge a commission? How much is
the commission if they are charging. I was not charged a commission when I exchange on the U.S. side. I changed $600 dollars.

The Cambios usually charge around two percent. That isn't refered to as a "commision." If they say commision, they're refering to something else.
They do that so they can advertise a higher rate on the signs around their businesses. Be careful of that.
On $600 it might be worth the small expense, $12, to get it done and move on. The ATMs give the official bank rate. That's your best bet.

Assuming you have no banking affiliation with the ATM you use, ATMs will generally hit you with a 7.5 peso charge.
Even being affiliated can lead to some surprising differences in what exchange rate you are given. One gal over here in Sonora decided to experiment.
Here's what she wrote:
"On Jan 26 I compared ATMs from Santander and HSBC in Guaymas. I took 3000 pesos out of a BofA acct in the US thru Santander and the same thru HSBC
out of an HSBC acct in the US. This was done with 10 minutes.
Neither one is supposed to have ATM fees, etc., for members, which I am.
HSBC charged me US$221.78 and BofA 212.84 - big difference.
I guess it's goodbye to HSBC ....."

nope, menu and marina/dockage prices are in pesos. exchange rate is if one wants to pay in dollars.
driving through La Paz, signs in windows show anywhere from 12 to 1 to 14.50 I haven't checked gas stations,etc, as I always use pesos everywhere.
just observing.
