favorite Place for Birding Baja
Where is your favorite place to look at birds in Baja? We love the migrating birds at Estero in Ensenada, how about you?

my favorite, by far, is the palm area by the old trailer park in la ribera, next to the lagoon....and...south of hotel punta colorada halfway between
the rancho and the lighthouse
dyslexia is never having to say you\'re yrros.

Around East Cape you might have to move about to see lots of different species. From the beach to the mountains (about 12 miles from shore) the
habitat changes in fairly distinct lines -- just a couple hundred meters nearer the beach you'll encounter cardinals and pyruloxia, phainapepla which
stay in the thornbush scrub. At each seaside charco you'll see the water birds, up the hill in town the orioles and hummers, thrashers and wrens and
others. At the talus of the mountains you begin to see the jays and caracara.

On our recent trip we had a great time birding at Ojo de Liebre, adjacent to the whale watching pier and camping Palapa's. (the road in is only open
during whale season)

The San Jose Estero is a beautiful place to see many species of migratory birds and our locals as well. Go to El Presidente Hotel and walk the path
back toward town or walk the beach toward La Playa.....or both.
Right now in our yard the orioles are really enjoying our blooming aloe. Those tall yellow(and if you look closely blue tipped) flower stalks attract
not only orioles but also hummingbirds...quite a show!

6 for duck, 2 for geese and 8 for quail. Didn't think I knew did ya?
Having left my share of lead on the ground and in the ponds of my youth I have put down the gun for the camera. I do recall giving someone who asked
directions for good bird hunting on this site that they should go West out of Ensenada, don't think it was you though.
Keep the tips coming, we are considering a birding/fishing trip to Baja in May/early June.
I appreciate the ideas of good birding spots and hope that people will keep 'em coming.

For waders and waterfowl, many of the estuaries are top notch. The whole of Bahia Magdelena is very good.
For songbirds, flycatchers, hummingbirds — streambeds in the foothills can be good, as can farms, orchards, and urban gardens.
For typical desert birds — cruise dirt roads almost anywhere south of about Catavinia.
For Caracaras, hawks, ravens and other scavenger/predators — find a dump.
For vultures — look up.
