Sounds like the problem is you are unfamiliar with the area. The bus does stop there but that is not the only thing in Punta Prieta. The police in Punta Prieta patrol everything between BOLA turn off and Jesus Maria. The Comandante is Martin and Theodora is one of the deputies. Nice guys.

It sounds like some you need a little advice on how to travel in Mex. One of the best things I can tell you to is learn spanish and get to know the lady who runs your favorite taco stand, talk to the people who work at the Pemex, get to know the folks who run the camp grounds and hotels you frequent. These relationships will make your trips more rewarding and could save your life.

BTW, so far the only one of you who has been man enough to apologize for their personal attacks on our credibility is Sharks. Thanks Sharks. What's wrong with the rest of you?

:fire:

First of all, not all of us on this board are men and not everyone attacked your credibility. Also, some of us don't just travel in Baja, we live there at least part of the time.

I can only speak for myself, but while we think there is probably credibility to the story, we also know how these rumors can change and grow, and in this case I am only guessing, but I suspect that the number has grown.

IMHO, painting the people on this board with a very large brush is the only place where I would question your credibility.

We just returned from that area last week and we had not heard anything about this from any of the locals in our town, and stopped and visited with friends in Vizcaino. It is certainly not to say these these things are not happening, but it is difficult to believe that it has happened very recently to 40 or 50 cars and the rumors were not everywhere in that area. Yes, Vizcaino is south of GN, but all those areas are very connected, especially by rumors. And one of our friends in Vizcaino drives to Tijuana about every two weeks.

For us, it is a little like hearing from the locals that people are held up on the Tortugas road---we believe it, we are careful, but a couple of people in town have talked like it happens almost daily----and it doesn't.

Welcome, and I hope we can all continue to enjoy Baja.

DavidK --- thanks for explaning this forum, how people should approach it and its members--- You might think about using the word opinion, once in a while.

Well, Chris....If you're gonna hang around here, you have to wear your thick skin. Half the people you're addressing live here. They arn't tourists. And, this site gets a little cantankerous at times but, we, most of us anyway, learn that nothing you, or I, say is worth stressing over.
Have fun with it. You're probably getting more attention right now than you'll ever get for the rest of your life.

I didn't read Davids post before I got into mine. I should have. He does it so much nicer than I do.

By the way, Chris, my first visit to Ensenada was in 1971. Almost no paved roads in town. Snce that time, I have driven to Cabo and back dozens of times. Many other trips didn't take me that far. Over the years, I have heard stories about car-jackings and robberies. on a number of occasions, i have wondered when a vehicle out in the middle of nowhere makes a u-turn after I pass, or pulls onto the road behind me and I could see them closing distance. Vigilance. Knock wood. I have never had a single untoward incident. except maybe the crooked cop in Catavina. Just for the record, I was joking about the bus stop.

Does anyone know what the MO of the carjackers is? Do they pull alongside with a gun? Do they pretend to be broken down? Do they block the road?

I just drove through the area three days ago and saw nada.

Stories reported on this board would indicate all of the above. It is the frequency that would be an alarm. Let's face it, the same sort of activity occurs North of the border. When we see posts here about something that may have happened, and such posts are a few times a year, that's like background noise in our society. Problem with this post was that a number of 50 was mentioned and it is alleged to have happened in a relative compact time frame. That's why all the interest in this thread.

That is still an unanswered question---one we hope is answered.

We also hope that if it is happening that the government will do what they did south of Acapulco several years ago. After we drove the coast road from Guatemala, we were told that it was VERY dangerous---isolated and lots of robberies.

Well, they sent in the army big time and cleared out the problem. It is a lightly populated area so finding out information should not be that difficult for the army.

I for one, like the army stops---like having them around.

Nomands

I did not mean to paint everyone on this forum with a "broad brush" when addressing the "nay sayers". With the exception of about 5 or 6 members the feed back on this forum has been very useful and constructive. Shari, dennis, sharks, toneart and a few others have been very helpful. Thanks. I can tell you that until I hear this activity has ceased I will hook up with others in a convoy to protect my family and I will be careful getting money from ATM's. I won't stop in this area either.

I understand why we all have a tendency to doubt these rumors. But these days they need to be addressed regardless.

I also have to say most people in this forum seem to get it. However there a small percentage who do not. When I see someone advocating throwing soda cans to protect their lives and the lives of there loved ones I have to point out the stupidity of these types of comments. I'm sorry and I hope you were joking but I did not interpret it as joking. I also have to say that dismissing the comments of the lady at the taco stand, gas station or coffee stand who is out on MEX 1 talking to people traveling MEX 1 all day long is also bad advice.

I have a house in Baja and spend about 2 months a year there and I love it. Why have I not shared these experiences? Lets just say Baja gets of plenty of exposure and I don't feel the need to advertise. Baja has a tendency to become a victim of its own popularity. I live in San Diego and everyone here know's how great Baja can be. We are also on front line of the drug wars.

Thanks to most of you who have been very kind and encouraging. To those who that have been less than kind I understand that you may not want to face these issues and would prefer the messenger lack credibility. However personal attacks will only make posters reluctant to share there experiences and that is what I think happened with Dennis. Dennis should have shared the information he received three weeks ago so others could have looked into these concerns. If people have been caravaning to BOLA because of this then that tells me this information came to this forum later than it could have. That's not good.

So, if you feel its better to ignore personal attacks then address them please let me know. I am new to posting here and could use advice in dealing with those who do not get it.

Thanks

bajachris:

I have not been immune to attacks here on my motives or credibility. One idiot poster awhile back even stooped to making inappropriate comments about my Mexican wife. This forum seems to attract elements from all extremes with most of us somewhere in the middle. It is just part of online life here at the BajaNomad forum. The sooner one learns to understand the way things seems to work here, the sooner you will discover how to spend more time participating instead of defending. The key I have discovered is to simply ignore that which is not worth responding to. I am not saying that it is always fair or right, but neither you or I will change the current status quo. Somehow it does seem to work in its own way as it is.

Dennis is correct that one needs thick skin to remain active here, sort of like life in Baja in general I suppose. Actually it reminds me an awful lot of life at home as a kid at the dinner table each night...

Bajachris,

While I am definitely a "Newbie" here, I, like you have spent much time in Baja over the last 15 years. We built a house in San Antonio Del Mar (Colonet) about 5 years ago. Sadly, we have not had the opportunity to explore much of the peninsula because my esposo is still working.

I am a "lurker" for the most part, but it pains me when I see posters attacked. I for one, appreciate any and all information posted under the multitude of topics on this forum. It should be up to the individual reader to determine if something is valid or not... attacking the poster serves no helpful purpose, IMHO.

So with the others who have posted in this thread and provided additional information as well as defended you... I thank you all. Everyone makes their own decisions about various aspects of their life... their own research, their travel, the care that they exercise in their travels and whether or not they choose to throw all caution to the wind.

While a number of you show a healthy degree of skepticism in your responses to Bajachris, let's all please try to be civil... Don't we all share some very basic things... we all love Baja, and we all care about our fellow BajaNomad's safety and well being?

Okay... fire away!

Dern just got back from Bahia a week ago. When I told him of this thread he mentioned that there were many Federales de Caminos on the road between the Bahia turn off and El Rosario.

Rather than wearing thick skin, some of us prefer to sport asbestos undies every now and then. :fire: (_|_) They are less noticeable.

Welcome to the board Chris, and thanks for the heads up.

Chris, thanks for the report and one of the things you will learn rather quickly that there is no Basic IQ level required for registering on this site. so if you understand the curve of IQ distribution, you can quickly figure out who is average, less than average and those few who are above average. :wow:
