Mexican beer and LIMES?
OK, many of us like to pinch a lime in our beer.
Question: Does anyone know WHY this started? I KNOW what the purpose of the lime in the beer and why it became popular!
Anyone know the answer? I do...

To disinfect Corona bottles?
It imparts a better flavor to the decomposing mice.

I heard it had to do with the smell that was being produced in clear bottles. If a clear bottle sat in the hot sun it would get a bad odor, by putting
the lime in it would disguise the smell. This was quit some time ago, but i believe the practice has stuck.

As far as I can recall, it started with Tecate, the first Mexican beer in cans. The steel cans gave it a slight metallic taste which was alleviated
by squeezing some lime juice onto the top and sprinkling a little salt on. I still like to do that, but only with TKT.
I don't drink Corona at all and I never push a slice of lime into the neck of a bottle of Pacifico or other beer. In Mexico, beer bottles get
recycled. I once got a bottle of Pacifico and after a couple of swigs, noticed something in the bottle. It was a nice blue, moldy old lime peel.
All my childhood I wanted to be older. Now I\'m older and this chitn sucks.

That could be it, i think i had squeezed quite a few limes at the time that i herd the story. But as i recall it had to do with disguising a smell or
taste.

Yes, don't drink Corona! However, Sol is in a clear bottle and doesn't stink like Corona?
Oh well... Pacifico is muy bueno... XX, too! In fact, it tastes great on tap... Pacifico wasn't available, but XX was for our newly aquired
kegerator!

I think Madison Avenue started that as an advertising gimmick with Corona although anything that alters the taste of Corona is a welcome addition.

Oso..right on the mark. I remember the first can of Tecate I ever had. 1961 on the beach at Acapulco..and we DID put salt and lime on the can lid to
overcome the bad taste of the steel cans.

The last case of Corona I bought had a skunky taste. My preference is Modelo
Especial in the bottle, but Especial in the can is about the best Mexican
canned beer I've found.

Limon Verde
What I can't figure out is WHY Gringo Hosts ASSUME that you want a Lime stuffed in your Beer. You'd think they'd ask first. I'd tell them to keep it
for someone else.

We bring lime juice and put a squeeze in if we desire the taste, that way there are no peels left in the bottle but taste is simular. Connie

Corona is one of the greatest marketing successes in history. Old timers probably recall Corona in squat, brown bottles. It was in Mexico, what Old
Milwaukee or Keystone is in the states, a second or third tier beer. Sticking it in tall clear bottles for export, and combining it with the iconic
beach commercials took it from nowhere, to the number one import in the states, supplanting Heineken. The good news is that its market share has
fallen somewhat. Maybe enough folks like those of you with the anti-Corona posts have come to realize that it is still a third tier beer, no matter
how well marketed.

Limes contain a bit of sodium, a flavor enhancer. It also collapses the bubbles that produce the foam at the top of a glass which some afficionados
don't like.
For me, a squeeze of lime in a "blond" beer enriches what is a somewhat thin taste.
Mexican beer: I'll have it in the bottle.
Limes for light beer served very cold in summer.
Limes should never, ever see the lip of a dark full-flavored beer such as Negro Modelo which I choose in the cooler winter months.

I actually like lime or lemon in a Negro Modello, I guess it is a matter of individual taste, huh.

OK... Here is the REAL answer......
Using limes on/in Mexican beer started because lime juice repels flies. If you are ever in a situation where flies are landing on the top of your
beer... squeezing lime juice on the mouth of the bottle will repel them.
Flies will never land on a fresh cut lime, never!
Interesting responses to this thread ....
