temp u.s. insurance
A few of us Baja dwellers have vehicles registered in S.D. and need to find low-cost or temporary insurance when back in the states for a few
days/weeks... we all use Lewis and Lewis for our MX ins. but need something creative for the short-term visits?????? HELP!!!!!

US ins laws changed sometime back which now means the US Ins can't deny you ins for being previously uninsured. In effect this means that any ins
provider must quote you and offer ins regardless of the fact that have none which makes part time ins possible with any carrier.
You don't need to inform them in advance of your plans to cancel soon. You don't need to aquire temporary ins. You need a regular old policy, that you
will choose to end soon.
Therefore you can go to any ins provider and get a quote for a year, start the insurance and stop it when you choose. You find this very affordable as
the rates are pro-rated.
In any case, I have found, as have many others, many very nice agents who are willing to start and stop ins for the period you will be in the US.
I insure 3 vehicles for liability in the US and the cost is under $200/yr.

Unfortunately, the market is really small for daily or short-term insurance for U.S plated vehicles coming back across the border. Nobody offers it on
a daily basis as far as I know. I have heard of a policy that is offered for three months through Bristol West (part of Farmers Insurance). I can
refer you to a Farmers agent that I know if you are interested.

One more reason to import your vehicle, no problem for day insurance,week or year. Need Mexican address.

They sell short term ins at the Otay border crossing in the street on the Mexico side. One day, one week, month etc. Right from the crossing lane,
there are runners who will exchange money and take your paperwork to an office right there and fix you up.

If they do offer it to U.S. vehicles I would love to know the name of that business too!!!

Allstate has good start and stop policies. We use it on our wood/farm truck and start and end it for 1 day sometimes.

I just called Allstate and after 5 minutes of an "automated customer service provider" I finally got to talk to a real person......in India. He was
not able to answer my questions either.
So 24Baja....do you keep an annual policy with a lay up provision and just start and stop as needed?

We have used this company for years. You must have either a FM3 or FM2. Our cars all have US plates. Once your in their computers it doesn't take
more than 5 minutes to get a policy. Very helpful, we haven't ever had a problem. It was running $12 per day, that was last year, not sure of the
price this year.
