taking tires to a friend

my buddy at work is getting new tires on his tacoma. i have a friend in baja who could really use the old (25% tread left) BFG's for his truck. when we showed up last time he had a flat and i gave him a package of plugs and aired him up. will the guys at the border at tj want me to pay a duty on these? can i tell them they are a gift and will that matter to them?

Ultimately you must decide, you declare the value and that determines your rate.

would a receipt saying i paid $20/tire from my buddy help determine value? or does the inspector just laugh and determine the final price?

Shouldn't have problems with used tires, especially with that little tread. Just say they're for your dunebuggy inn Baja.

I've taken over several sets without ever being asked.

The guy at Tecate will set the value even if you have a receipt that he thinks is too low.:fire::fire:

Some girls prefer diamonds.
Some, apparently, like tires.

Me, I'd rather receive fresh flowers, thanks.

Dern usually travels with more spares than we need. The times that we've been pulled into secondary we have not been questioned about them.

Tell them their for a friend that runs the, baja 1000 or 500 and his car is in mexico, they then don't care, because it is a cause rather than something other, they don't know one tire from another meaning size etc.

Their big problem is with new, unmounted tires. If they give you any crap, which they probably won't, tell them you'll take them out and put them in the trash. It will either be a good day or a bad day at customs. Can happen to anybody. Whatever happens, you'll have done your best to help a buddy. What more can you do.

Good idea Dennis, leave them there as trash, I don't think they want a stack of tires hanging around.

You could always tell them that you're going camping, and that they are your fire starters for the cold desert nights.
