Yes. I saw this on my recent trip. I pulled off the highway to try to explore but I got mired in a bunch of beach houses and Palapas. It did not
seem like I could get to the southern end of the beach from where I was at. Is there another entrance for beach camping?

Why has nobody brought up Juncalito, south of Loretro ? Has it changed since the last time i was there ? I'm planning a trip down there mid July. Easy
beach launch for my tin boat, not much wind & good fishing. I've never had a bad time there. Do i need to think about a change this year ? Thanks
for any info. |

I have done san lucas cove years ago. It was perfect for me but my family likes a bit more beach + sand + remoteness. It was a bit too much like a
campground/trailer park. The fishing was good and it was easy to make bait right outside the little bay. steve

Steve,
I've been watching this post and I'm in the same boat as you. I had been camping at Punta Chivato during summer Dorado season since I was a kid. I
don't know where one can get the same experince as this camping beach offered. Hopefully someone will post the magical answer. Until then I guess I
will save up to buy one of those nice houses on Shell Beach near Russ.
I love Punta Chivato, Mulege, and the entire Baja experience.

Steve...you took the turn off for El Juncalito where I live among the palapas and beach houses. the sandy camping beach at the south end of El
Chenque Bay is known as Free (Playa Libre...poor translation I know) Beach. you cannot access it from El Juncalito. you need to drive Hyw 1 about a
quarter mile south to the next, unmarked, dirt road to get in there.
no service BUT this winter for the first time the City of Loreto started coming out every few weeks charging up to 200 pesos/night for camping,
lowered underprotest to about 50-55/night if one stayed 14 plus days. they haven't been out lately...no gringos to fleece...so maybe they've given it
up for the season. ps they were also charging for Rattlesnake Beach just south of Pto Escondido, which is very nice, but isolated and often subject
to theft and breakins particularly off season.
reality\'s never been of much use out here...

If you want it warm, stay on the SOC, Pacific is chilly. Anywhere on the Bay of Conception is great.
Asuncion will be mid 80s to low 90s that time of year.....brrrrrrr

Thanks for this info.
The Juncalito looked so pretty that I wanted to check it out. I do not mind paying particulary if they pick up trash or something. Is the fishing
for dorado any good in late July early august? Sometimes the water is too cold up at Punta chivato at that time.
Is there anything for sale in there Juncalito? Just curious really. Thanks again. steve

NO services. occasional sporatic garbage pick up in winter. in summer? no se.
the water is warm and the dorado fishing is excellent in summer.
El Juncalito is primarily leased land. improvements come up for sale from time to time. u2u me if seriously interested and do talk to everyone you can
locally as things are very, uh, fluid as in most of Baja.
reality\'s never been of much use out here...

There is still some open camping at the San Bruno that is east from the military checkpoint near km 25 north of Loreto. A grove of palms on the
southern part of the beach offers shade. Please don't litter. This is a little late, but may serve for this summer.

Thanks for the info.
I will check it out on google earth and perhaps put it on the list. If I go to to one of the other spots I intend to do some exploring with this
included. steve

All, I just "heard" that people are again camping at Punta Chivato which is different from a couple months ago when I was there and there was
absolutly no camping on the beach at the point. Not sure how to confirm but if you are going down there I would have a back up plan just in case
You all know how things go in Mexico so I am sure the situation is very fluid and changing all the time depending on who is at the new gate, what the
new owners are doing, etc... I think every year that I have been going down there (10+) it has been rumored to be closing down to camping. Which is
why I think we were all surprised when it actualy happened last year. Hopefully it is true that people can camp there again because it a wonderfull
place, one of my favorites in baja.

Hey All, Thank for your help in this matter. We just got back from 2 weeks in Basillio and it was great. I had pulled a gpx file off the web from an
old report and it worked perfect to find the camp spot from Hwy 1.
I fully recommend this spot although you should know a few things.
The dirt road from Hwy 1 to the beach is about 10 miles long and is much worse than the road into Chivato. Deep sand in spots and some good hills.
That being said I did the road in 2 hours pullng a 20' enclosed trailer behind my 4x4 F250.
No other campers while we were there. A few mexicans came to swim on occasion. This might be a good thing but it was remote.
The closest town was Loreto at an hour + 20 minutes away.
Thanks for all of your help in making this decision. Especially to Russ in PC. :-)
