cargo (sea) container into baja?

What I'd like to do is put a bunch of stuff (home and garage furnishings) into a sea container, import it to San Felipe and keep the container down there. I'm talking about those inter-modal steel containers that are used on cargo ships, I want to use a 40ft one. They have trucks that haul them on roads.

Anyone tried this? I suppose I'll need to involve a customs broker and declare the contents but not sure if the cargo container itself will be an issue - it pretty much just looks like a semi trailer on the road.

Can you recommend a good customs broker for this?

Chris - If you have enough "stuff" to fill a sea container, or you just want the container on the other end of the move, I think your move is going to be more complicated than you think.

On the other hand, if you just need to move a truck full of household "stuff" , then the normal customs broker/exporter process will be fine.

You probably already know that you can import household items into Mexico under a one-time FM3 manifest from your local Mexican consulate. It's duty free, for the most part, as long as these are your used household items. You would need to pay duty on any new items you're importing.

I used Columbia Exports in San Diego (Otay Mesa) to move my things to La Paz. It would definitely be worth a call to them to explore all your options.

FYI, Columbia Exports says it's no problem at all to import a sea container, either empty or with my stuff in it. Just need to get a Commercial Invoice for the container itself when I buy it. Thanks for the lead!
