Empanadas La Paz
This is a spin-off of the Applebee's La Paz thread.
For those of you interested in empanadas in La Paz(Bajahowodd?), I managed to make a stop the other day at the "Rincon Porteño - Empanadas Argentinas
y algo mas" and had some really good empanadas. You have a choice of 12 or so different fillings in these oven-baked Argentinian style empanadas. We
tried the carne suave, the carne picante, the cebollas, queso, & tocino, and the rajas & queso - all very good.
This is a small place and seems to do a large carry-out business, but you can also sit down and eat there - they have a couple of small tables. Also
offer pizza and pie/quiche type dishes. Run by a very pleasant friendly Argentinian gentleman.
Prices are $14 pesos per empanada, and for the price they are a tad on the small side, but I will nevertheless be a
repeat customer.
On Marquez de Leon between G. Farias and Heroes de Independencia.

They had 2 kinds of sauces - one was red "tomatoey" and could perhaps be aji (sorry I didn't ask for the name of it) - the other was made with lots of
parsley and called something like 'chimichurri'.
From the malecon go straight up Marquez de Leon. Marquez de Leon is the street that starts at the end of the malecon by Papas and Beer - it's also
the street that Rancho Viejo is on. The Rincon Porteño is about 8 or 9 blocks up from the malecon. It's in the 2nd block after you pass Altamirano -
on the right in the middle of the block. Good luck!

Another place - We tried Johnathan's new Tailhunter bar & restaurant last week. it's on the malecon. Nice atmosphere on 3 levels with good views
of the bay and sunset. Friendly staff, cold beer. Had a hamburger that was OK.

Placeres Argintinos Restaurante...
...also has empanadas on their menu. Corner of Ensenada & Urban Normal.
I think the world is run by C- students.

audiobaja - thanks for the link to the aji recipe. It sounds like a winner of a sauce. In any case, I don't think it's the same as any of the sauces
at the take-out empanada place.
BMG - yes, Placeres Argentinos is the restaurant with the Argentinian grill and empanadas too. Had a great meal there a while ago.
Since we live a ways outside of La Paz and only get in there once a week or so for errands and shopping, I'm usually exhausted when I get back home
and really don't feel like cooking up a meal. So carry-out empanadas (or carry-out whatever) that just need to be warmed up are great for those days.
I really like the Argentinian ones because they are oven baked and not fried.

Baked is usually healthier, depending upon the filling. There's an Argentine Empanada place not too far from South Coast Plaza (Santa Ana/ Costa Mesa
border) that we frequent. But as bad as they may be healthwise, my mouth waters every time I think of this little place in the San Gabriel Valley that
does the Mexcian fried ones, with an olive inside. Thanks, Linda for the more specific directions. I'm gonna make a visit and check them out next
week.
