2009 Ford diesel Truck questions


I am thinking about buying a new F250 4x4 diesel. As I understand it, no areas of Mexico stocks the USA new stadard diesel fuel. ( I will be new to diesel) Can somebody tell me what you need to do to drive these trucks in Baja or the mainland? Thanks

The consensus, after many discussions, is that true ULSD to all parts of Mexico might still be a year away but that the likelihood of it causing problems is minimal.

Of course, if you are based in San Felipe as your name implies, it's possible that any diesel in that corridor is already ULSD as there is some indication from Pemex that they are getting refined diesel from the US along the border. I dont have a link to that on the Pemex site but someone on some board I frequent did post this.

Personally, in my 2000 F350, I can easily tell if the diesel is ULSD or the old stuff. Truck runs smoother and quieter and smokes a bit more on the old stuff.

there are lots of NEW diesels down here in Mulege this winter...

they ALL run just fine on the fuel provided at the Pemex

If you purchase a 2009 Ford diesel pick up you have to be concerned with the "DPF" diesel particulate filter that is in place of the muffler, using anything other then ULSD ( ultra low sulfer diesel ) will cause the DPF to plug prematurely and cost you dearly to either have it cleaned or exchanged, once the DPF plugs the computer will shut down the engine and not let you restart until you service the DPF, and that would only be able to be done in the states. You can use ULSD on any engine previous to when the DPF was first put into diesels which was 2007 with out any problems.

a DPF collects particulate from the exust to eliminate smoke in the air

a method must exist to clean that filter or it would clog immediately

there is a system designed to burn off the accumulated particulate

the computer regognizes this and heats the exhust to clean the DPF

it's all about keeping the air clean

Diesel Fuel!!!


Mexico now has low sulfur fuel,so just keep a additive handy when filling up. Add a bottle of LUCAS with every tank and stay away from fuel in Viscanano old station. As I got some bad fuel there. They run their tanks to low.

They have had low sulphur diesel for some time. We are talking Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel here.

I have an 05 Powerstroke that has worked fine so far. I read a report recently, don't remember where, of a person with a late model diesel with a DPF that clogged in Baja and had to be trucked home. Serious warranty issues. They were confident it was a clogged DPF caused by the fuel.

The 6.0 ended in the '07 model year. 2008 and newer are 6.4s and are supposed to run on only ultra low sulphur diesel. A lot of people are claiming that they have no problems running Mexican diesel, but how many have run several tanks through their trucks. You are taking a chance using the Mexican diesel in an '08 or newer truck until they change over to ulsd.

Very Important!! When at the pump, remember that when you're south of the border, the BLACK nozzle is diesel, not the GREEN one like the U.S. (I made this very expensive mistake only once :rolleyes:)

You might want to wait a yaer. the 6.4 is very costly to work on and next year Ford is coming out with their new motor. I heard from a friend of mine that it is a great motor with more torque and way better fuel economy.
