VHF/Marine radio in San Felipe
Does anyone have any advice about VHF/Marine radio use in Baja and San Felipe in general.
What channels are used and for what?
Also do you have a recomendation for a brand.

South Campos is channel 69, Puertocitos is 21, sorry, I forget what North Beaches and El Dorado are.

I have a relatively inexpensive brand of Radio ($129 at West Marine San Diego, forget the brand).
Don't cheap out on the antennae, just because you get it at a high elevation (which you should) doesn't mean your guarenteed good reception. Buy the
good antennae! Shakesphere is fine.
Nomad :Steekers" has called me on occasion from EDR to Playa Hermosa and we figured it was 30 miles away as the crow flies...But also that is "line of
sight".
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

Standard Horizon and ICom are generally considered the best brands. Some of the cheaper brands dont actually put out a full 25w when bench tested.
Chuck, your inexpensive brand could either be the West Marine "brand" or a Uniden. In either case, it is a Uniden.
Go with an antenna that gives you a connection for your radio that you must solder, rather than simply crimp.
Consider getting one that has an external EDIT: SPEAKER jack if you think you might want to monitor while outside the house.
The Shakespeare 5202 is probably the best VALUE antenna out there. You can add masts to it or it is a fairly common threaded base to find threaded
pipe to make your own extension for more height.

WE use Icom's which cost more but are better radios & get both Marine & Hi-Band. I believe Hacienda uses 67(or used to anyway) & EDR uses
74 Still have a couple Uniden Marine radios but have now replaced them in house & vehicles with the Icom V-8000.

Has anybody had any experience with the MIDLAND NAUtICO 1 (NT-1) handheld walki-talkie Marine Radios?? They are under $100, but I have never seen
them reviewed as to their performance.

I'll look around for the notes from a couple years ago. Taxi cabs and some municipal services use the marine channels. I think 8 was cabs but I'll
look to see what I had written down.
I've talked to people at Laguna Percebu many times over the years from my place at EDR. I'm at about 460 ft elevation, probably 100+ feet higher
than steekers. There are more hills for him to overcome than I have.
I've talked to people with handhelds standing on the beach at Puerto Penasco and they came in as good as meme does from a block away.
I also use Icoms including a couple Icom V8 hand helds for out and about.

If I remember correctly somewhere on the EDR website there is a list of the
local San Felipe Marine Radio Channels.
Just remembered, it was on the San Felipe "The Net" website.
