Living in Baja

Does anyone have experience with renting a modest place from locals, what the cost might be, etc.?

Where in Baja. Prices are very, very different from one area to another.

When you ask a general question like this you are going to get a bunch of goofy answers. It would greatly help if you narrow down the area since Baja is a 1000 mile peninsula and things are entirely different in say Ensenada compared to Mulege or Asuncion. That is not much different than asking about the United States when you meant Florida rather than New Jersey.

I'm thinking Baja Sur . . . uh, between, not necessarily in Loreto and Mulege, for example, a small community, a little two room adobe or some such thing with a few neighbors.

I'm looking in the same area too and $500 per month is the minimum I'm finding for small houses that appear to me to be acceptable.

Are you familar with the area? How much time have you spent visiting?

Here's a tip, if you rent a house on a dirt road that has even a light amount of traffic, make sure it's on the upwind side. Unless you like dirt.;)

Plenty of places for rent in that price range all up and down Baja. You've got to get down there and shop around.:)

Denaca, what's wrong with Mulege and Loreto? Those are my two favorite towns in the entire baja.

You can find low cost places to rent (or buy) there. You just have to look effectively. Looking effectively means you have to stay there a week or two or more, ask everybody (locals) you talk to about what you are looking for, and I do mean everybody: taxi drivers, hotel employees, store clerks, car rental people, people at bars and restaurants, panga skippers, real estate agents (not the broker/managers).

The best advice has already been given, spend some time and get to know the locals. Thats what I did and have been renting for 16 years with no rent increase and way under $500,

where where are you looking? Loreto is pretty much a free for all definitely a buyers or a renters market. You can pretty much name your price at this point. More se vende and se renta signs here than ever before. dirt is everywhere even on paved roads but it can very from one place to another. dirt and dust are part of Baja if you donīt like it then you'll hate it here, ask the locals and look around. good luck.
