BOLA vs Asuncion
Hello fellow Nomads
I have a limited amount of time to drive to Loreto in my RV and rather than taking the normal 2 or 3 days from Southern California, I could take a
week and would like to do a little exploring along the way this time. I will be driving the Gringo Express (my RV) one way to Loreto the end of
October and here are some preguntas.
On the average, what is better fishing towards the end of October, BOLA or Bahia Asuncion?
How far off hwy 1 is Bahia Asuncion and how far is it on the dirt road when the pavement ends? On a scale
of 1 to 10, 10 being Baja bad, what do you rate the non pavement road to Asuncion
Is there AT & T cell phone service in either BOLA and/or Asuncion? (I need to keep in touch with my office) I have the international calling plan
and I know Ican use the phone in Loreto, etc.
Now Shari, I know it’s hard to be objective because you live in paradise but do your best!

Fishing might still be good in October in Bola. And it will be a very nice temperature by then.
Bola is very easy to get to. Nice road. A 1-2
B. Asuncion should be really hitting the peak of their fishing right about October. The road going in is not very good but you should make it okay if
you are careful. It takes longer than Bola. The road is 5-7.
Don't know the phone question.
Figure 3 days in either place if you want 1 day to fish

Hi Howard-
I'll put in my two cents....October is a tough month to pick in my opinion. The weather is great in both places.
BA is 70 miles from Vizcaino. If I recall, there should only be about 10 kilometers of dirt road come October. It's usually okay...I'd say about a 5
out of 10.
I get better cell reception in BA than in San Diego so no worries there.
Both places have their pluses...I'll let a few others chime in.

I realize it like having to choose between 2 really good ice creams but I can only have one this trip, BA or BOLA. Life is not fair, but I will take
what I can, one or the other this venture. (I guess that is pretty fair)

Check out the fishing report archives on Mexfish.
It appears fishing is winding down in Bola by the end of October. But each season is a little different so you'll have to watch very closely near the
time you will be there.
B. Asuncion on the other hand will be getting better at the end of October. The Pacific in that area has a late season. I caught 2 yellowfin tuna
fishing with Juan at Christmas time.
The fishing season was long over in Bola by then.

Ill be in Asuncion end of Oct. Begaining of Nov. My main reason for going to Asuncion that time of year is fishing. Ive fished BOLA It can be vary
good in Aug & Sep even into Oct. but by the end of Oct ????? If you are looking for great scenery go to BOLA.
The road in to Asuncion was not that bad in Feb. more has been paved I'm told. The bad part of the road in, is not the dirt road but paved part as
you leave Visciano. There are some BAD SWALLOW YOUR CAR POT HOLES on that road.
If you pay attention you'll be OK
Either place if you plan to go fishing give yourself 3 days to fish 1 day. The day you arrive it will most likely be too late to go fishing. Fish the
next day the spend the night and leave the next morning, (3 days)

First of all I am biased, very biased----we love Bahia Asuncion and October is one of the best months here. No more since I admitted to being biased.
Except---latest road report and we just came in on Tuesday.
Almost 4 miles of the Tortugas/Bahia Asuncion road from Viscaino has just been resurfaced---it was awful before, and instead of just filling the pot
holes, they resurfaced it!
From there to the turn off, another approx. 40 miles, the pavement ranges from great to a mine field---just do not speed. The Big sand dune is not
really there, but it is very rough road there. Also, there are several little sand spits partly on the road----best to go around as they are as hard
and cement topes.
Turn off to Bahia Asuncion. First part of the pavement---do not speed as there is one really rough part that has not been fully repaired from the
storm. Then where you can see the second part of the pavement starts---great condition----that covers about 1/2 the road.
Now, the new part being paved---as of Tuesday was being rolled and should open VERY soon.
So, if they do nothing more between now and Octorber, you will have approx 11 miles of dirt left to go. That part really depends on when the road
grader has been through.
If you do decide on Bahia Asuncion, check right before you come for the most current conditions, and for the detailed instructions so you do not end
up on the Roller Coaster Road.
Distance? From Vizcaino to the turn off is 44 miles +/- and from the turn off to BA is approx 26 miles +/-
Also, Do not even think about driving out here after dark---not the first time----no, no.

Just back from a Vizcaino trip and we drove on the new 6 km stretch of pavement...wooo hoooo...awesome...there are only 7 miles left of graded dirt
road now. It's about an hour and a half drive in from Mex.1
October is our best fishing month and outstanding weather too. We have excellenent telmex land line phone service, telcel cell service and the
campground has WIFI too.
If you decide to go to BOLA...fish with Juan's uncle...jose rosas! give them our love.

Campo Renae is a great choice too. It's a lot closer and a great campground. Last time I talked to the folks there they said they charged about $65 to
take you out. (fishing that is) compared to $120 in other places. Just another option .

Our first time into Asuncion, we took the roller coaster road, at night !
It's probably safer at night, assuming the oncoming traffic has headlights !
I'd choose Asuncion in late October.
Great fishing, great weather, warmest water temps of the year, fishing with Juan is karmic .....
And don't forget campleader Shari; she will take good care of you.

In addition to the good points others have offered, there are a lot of activities for non-fisher folk. This is a warm and friendly community, and
gringos are welcomed and invited to the many community and family events. Residents want to practice their English and they are great at explaining
things to gringos with limited Spanish. We're a family-friendly small town.
In my time here I've seen deep cross-cultural friendships develop, and I include myself in that group. Some of us go cruising; for example, Senor
Kevin does a daily round. There are old friends to meet and new folks to welcome.
You will find good trails at both ends of town for hiking, biking and beach combing. We have an ecletic selection of English language books at the
library in Shari's campground. Take a book, leave a book. There is a steady turnover.
This is my two cents on life in Bahia Asuncion.
