Baja California Plates

Do Baja California (North) license plates stay with a car when a car is sold, or stay with the owner?

In other words, when buying a car does the previous owner remove the plates to put on their replacement vehicle and the new owner then gets a fresh plate and number; or does the new owner take over the existing plates?

In South they stay with the owner---not with the vehicle -- new owner--new plates

Thanks - so if I'm in BCS I would get fresh license plates with a new number when buying a car, and the previous owner would get to keep the old plates to use on their new vehicle.

Does anybody know if this is the same in BCN (Mexicali, San Felipe)? In the US it varies by state.

Pretty sure it's the same in all of Mexico. In Baja Calif. you can get Frontera or National plates depending on the vehicle and your needs. Don't know details of doing it.

If youpre in San Felipe, check with the guy running Chumpo Pizza on Mar de Cortez, across from ISSI and next to Dr Cruz, dentist. He does imports and probably has the answers.

Thanks Lou. So if I buy a Mexican car (I now have a Baja California driver's license) I don't need to take into account whether it has a nice number plate or not. :-)

When I'm back in San Felipe I certainly will check with that guy as I'd much rather import my existing car (if it is affordable) than have to sell it and buy a local one. As far I'm aware it's too new (2006) to import under the old rules, and it appears the new rules are not applied everywhere yet and may be too pricey.

So it'll be worth talking with somebody who knows the current rules as they are actually applied locally (that sums up dealing with anything official in Mexico really - how laws are interpreted locally is what counts).
