Flying with a dog health certificate
I am flying with my dog (in a dog cage in the cargo hold) from Loreto to Los Angeles on Alaska Airlines. We are driving down and flying back to Los
Angeles and we will be gone around 3 weeks. I have done this many times with my dogs over the years and I have always had a health certificate from my
veterinarian in the States. They were good for 30 days.
Last night when I made the reservations for myself and "Gringo the Dingo", Alaska Airlines says the new rule is the health certificate must be within
the last 5 days of issue. Anyone have first hand information on this? Does this would mean that I would have to get a certificate from the local
Vet. in Loreto or can I bring an undated one down, fill in the date prior to departure? Has anyone gone through this and where do they check the
most, Mexico or the States?

My experience flying with my dog on Alaska Airlines is that the airline is the only authority asking for the health certificate.
Chazz and I flew home to Oregon on August 9th and when I presented my Oregon health certificate to Febrero (Alaska's Loreto gate agent) he didn't
mention that it was issued by my vet in Oregon on June 26th. Nothing was said about a five day window of time from date of issue.
Upon arrival in LA, the immigration paper the airline gave me to fill out was flagged by the ICE Agent who checked my passport. I had to be screened
with the dog and show his rabies certificate to the Agricultural Inspector. They never looked at my dog. Make sure you have that rabies certificate
with you; also, the one your vet gives you for your dog's collar works as well. They also confiscated a small bag of dog food I had.
I would go out to the airport around noon on the day of your flight and ask Febrero what the deal is.

it all depends on who is checking.....calif health certs (international health certs) are good for 10 days. some people checking have their own grace
period. the reason health certs are good for a short period of time is that is the incubation time of a disease on average.......just go to a vet in
loreto and get a health cert the day before you fly. you also need rabies vaccine within 1 year

Dog
Rabies vaccine from the US is considered good for 3 years, from Mexico, 1 year. As far as I can tell from the label the vaccine is exactly the same,
go figger.

Any idea what the Vet. in Loreto does to figure out if the dog is healthly and how much does he charge for a health certificate?

he examines the dog like all vets, or hes supposed to. just like your physician does to examine you......except for the obligatory turn your head and
cough jokes....., i dunno, probably 30$ ie half of what usa/canadian vets do.....

By coincidence, two of my dear friends are veterinarians and in fact, my partner in my Loreto properties is a DVM in the States. I fully understand
what they are supposed to do; I just wanted some first hand info. from anyone who has had experience with the Loreto Veterinarian. I am not that
paranoid but I want to make sure that no harm will come to Gringo the Dingo during his examinination. In the $30 range is good piece of mind that
nothing goes wrong at the LTO airport and I have no problem with that. Anyone have any experience with the Loreto vet.?

oh sorry, given the "bring down an undated (and therefore unsigned) health certificate and fill it out when im down there" comment in your original
post, i erroneously figured you didnt know how they worked...
