la paz, us customs
i was told i could renew my passport at the us customs office in la paz ( if its still there ) can anyone shed some light on this ?

You can renew it in Cabo San Lucas at the U.S. consulate.

There is
no consulate in La Paz. I would think that the extra hour to Cabo would be closer than San Diego.

When I renewed my passport, I just sent the documents by bajapack to SJC and a bank transfer and they did it and sent it all back...piece of
pastel...no driving anywhere.

Renewal
Just went through this. No way to renew in La Paz. Had to drive to Cabo to submit renewal ap and pay the fee. Then had to drive to Cabo to pick it
up when it was ready. Because of paving and traffic problems in Cabo, found it was easier to park in the CCC lot and take a taxi into town, then taxi
back. Cost a few extra bucks but it was well worth it to avoid the hassle of dealing with traffic and parking near Plaza Nautica.
The new consulate person (I think her name is Trina Brown) and her staff are not yet authorized notaries, so they no longer send a staff person to La
Paz to perform the renewal service, as they did when Houston was running the shop. That, anyway, is their story. It may be that they simply do not
want to provide that service to La Pacenos anymore, as they have a backlog of work to clear up that accumulated in the time between Houston's
departure and Brown's arrival.

Traditonally the Cabo consulate would visit La Paz and pick-up and drop off stuff every 3 weeks at the Dock Cafe in Marina La Paz. there was even a
large sign behind the cashier which had the schedule of the consulate planned visits, like, probably coming by thursday-then Thursday would pass, and
a new note would say, it was too hot, they said next Thursday, then it rained and the traffic was bad so next Thursday.
Kind of odd to sit in a restaurant bar waiting for the Consulate to come meet you to hand off a package... but it did workout, presumably because of
the need. C'mon La Paz is the Capital City wahooo.

I agree that one would think the US State Department would favor a capital city. One would think. But then, Cabo is where so many Americans go.

you dont have to go anywhere
stay in town
here are the rules

now...have someone take the renewal app
to the states with the fees and old passport
and mail it to the passport agency
get your pictures in mulege
across from the ball field just past the mission
expidate for $60 extra
and pay for return "express mail"
its mailed to your usa address when finished
have someone there "express mail" it to you in mulege
all done
it'll save you time and money
i'm going up tuesday morning

cabo IS NOT a consulate...its an extension of tj
and
you DO NOT need to be a notary to process a passport application

I got my passport renewed in Cabo. I found out it had expired when I was at immigration. Went to the US Consulate office, they sent me to get
pictures, I had a couple beers while I waited for the developing, went back to the Consulate and handed in the form. Three weeks later they emailed me
saying it was ready to be picked up. No extra fees for expediting. Easiest renewal I've ever done. Ever. But I didn't have to drive from Mulege! If
I'd had the pictures it would have taken 10 minutes. I park at City Club and walk into the ghost town. I love summer.

Yeah, 3 weeks total. That's about how long between my town trips anyway. I guess I could have gone into town, had my pictures taken, sent the form,
money, pictures in with someone going to the US. Had it expedited for extra $ and picked it up at Mailboxes three weeks later on my next trip to town!
I'm just saying that it is easy to do down here unless you need it to travel someplace quickly.
