Dogs and food from the U.S.

Hey hows it going? We're looking forward to getting down to the Baja coast next week! I'm kinda new to the forum but I was wondering if anyone could give me some beta on taking a dog down to Baja with you? Is it much of a hassle for you or the dog? Is it a problem? Are there many ferrell dogs to contend with?

On a side note, what's the consensus on bringing food down from the U.S.?

Thanks!

No Problema

Two days ago, Three Dogs and Three-Four Hundred Bucks in groceries.

OK at the Border and the Army Checkpoint at El Chinero.

Never a problem in the past OTHER than ONE "comment" from a Customs agent that I had a LOT of food. Waved me on, though.

Why would you want to take food in? We buy ours when we get to our destination, or if boondocking, at the nearest town.

No problem going in as long as your dog is civilized.
Are you talking about bringing dog food?

On your return, the US may, probably will take away your dog food. Doesn't matter where you got it. Don't try to make sense of it...it's just the way it is.
Also, have your dog's shot record up to date and with you. They may ask for it.

There are ferrell dogs almost everywhere. Just tell your dog not to get territorial with them and you probably won't have any problems.

Have a good trip.

LOL.... I tell my dog that all the time, he doesn't always listen.

Also, I learned on a recent trip that you can not bring anything BACK that you can't bring from Mexico. So for example, you buy some deli ham in the US, you can not bring it back in to the US. Best thing to do is stay till you run out of food and are sick of tacos.

Going out they will take any opened dog food, even when you bought it in the states. Don't know why they just do.

Hey, Thanks for all the info! I figured we could get about anything we wanted to eat down there but my travelling companion is a little more concerned than me. I am still deliberating on whether or not to bring my canine companion. Thanks again! Great to be able to get feedback here.

Yeah....It has moderned up a bit and the grocery stores are first class. The only thing I haven't seen here yet is a Trader Joe's. Saw a new Papa John's pizza joint just the other day, right next to Dairy Queen.

Tell us about your trip, Evan. Where do you plan to go for how long......motels or camping...Pacifico or Corona....you know. The important stuff.

Well, We're going to head down the coast, surf and fish. Niether of us is really a fisher-type person, we figure we could get a local charter pretty easy? Not really surfers either but have been humbled before. We want to beach camp and drink local beer. Keep it pretty simple. Get as far South as we can but we only have a week. Any stellar sites, spots or must-see/dos?

Too bad you don't have a bit more time. For what you're looking for, this may be the spot. Maybe Shari will see this and have a chat with you.

Ditch the picky travelling companion, bring the dog, eat a lot of tacos.

Rib-Eye Tongiht. $3.49 Lb. in El Norte.

Dogs are picky, too. I ALWAYS have to bring their food down in addtion to the Chicken Hearts and Livers the one DEMANDS as part of his meal.

Dogs and Food in Baja

Coming south yesterday through San Ysidro, Mr. GJ had about 400 lobs of dog food in the vehicle. He was sent to secondary, the inspector saw the big black Great Dane peering out the window and said, "Pasale!"

It is always a good plan to have vet records with you, because you may be questioned going back to the U.S. Occasionally there are U.S. task forces at the border looking for smuggled animals and/or for drugs inserted in the animals.

I agree it's no big deal. Bring the dog and the food. Plan on taking nothing back to the USA and you'll be fine. Bring your shot records for the dog- but all you are required to have is proof of rabies (traveling by car across a land entry).

Rosarito Beach now requires dogs to be leashed on the beach and the people are vocal about it- so head further south to more dog-friendly territory.

hey...ya'alll...just a quick check in while I'm home changing from beach gear into dance party attire...it's dangerous checking into Campo sirena....boe4fun had the blender cranked and Woody and ms.woody party girl were stuffing margaritas in our sunbaked faces...then the moon came up, we had a few warm up dances....gorgeous night...moon...company.
Fabulous fishing today...tuna and yt galore...perfectly calm hot day....

serwich.....come if you dare!!

oh yeah.....umm...dog food is available everywhere...we have pedigree here...more costly but here...and lots of tuna steaks....I disagree about feral dogs...most of them belong to families and I can tell you they are very polite and dont chase chickens...which is the big problem with gringo dogs...they arent used to chickens roaming around free.

We'll try to make it down there! Sounds great. May get kidnapped by a bottle of tequilla and an isolated beach first, though. Thanks for the beta on the dogs.

Tell Gringo Dog to keep himself out of da cactus if he can. Plays havoc with feet and tongue.

Don't drink dirty stagnant water-- and if you do, coat your stomaches with Pepto Bismol,
doggy or doggy-daddy.

And don't eat the dead fish on the beach if you can possibly resist the aroma-- that's any of you!
