Solo Female driving LA to Ensenada..School me!

I plan on driving from LA to Ensenada on Saturday Nov.7th. 2009

I have already read all the sites about what to be careful of-
I am a seasoned traveler, but the reactions I'm getting from people is starting to worry me..

I'm wondering if:
1. Assuming I stay on the toll roads and drive in the day- is this a good idea?
2. Where should I stay in Ensenada- I was thinking La fonda?
3. Any advice you have- I want to hear it!!

Thank you, everyone!

(PS: I drive a 98 jetta, I will purchase travel insurance, I will change money at costco pre-border and being half mexican I speak some spanish.)

Welcome and rule one for now, don't listen to all those stories with bad reactions. The worst stories we hear are from people who never have and never will travel south of the border.

Toll road, yes and daytime, yes.

Have a great time.

Well...La Fonda isn't exactly in Ensenada. It's twenty miles north of the San Miguel toll plaza. That said, it would be an excellent place to stay.
Ensenada is pretty much a ghost town as far as hotels are concerned. You can pretty much stay where you want and the prices should be reasonable.

Don't let other people's reactions scare you off. Sounds as though you know the right things to do. Enjoy yourself.

Welcome to BajaNomad, by the way.

Sorry, Keri. I should have mentioned your place.
I think she's made a good choice wanting to stay in your area. There will certainly be more people to socialize with.

Only thing is that Daj wrote that she was going to Ensenada. Either she just meant she wanted to be in Baja, or she has a reason to be in Ensenada.?? In any event, yes. Ensenada hotels are begging for business. And yes, if you're not really needing to get to Ensenada proper, both La Fonda and Pyramid are excellent choice. And very different.

Awesome!!
Thank you all for your replies!!!
How long does it take to cross the border on a Sat?

I have no real reason to be in Ensenada, I just want to go lounge about for a few days and take it easy.

I don't even need to really go to Ensenada proper, I just picked it because I don't want to spend all day driving..

I really want to stay on the beach- so that's why I picked La Fonda, but if anyone knows of anything better- let me know!!

After? I'd recommend Estero Beach. That said, if you're going to be traveling alone, and your primary intent is to hang at the beach, either La Fonda or Pyramid would work for you. If you were with others, I'd lean toward going into Ensenada for the downtown scene and the restaurants. But alone, the others would apply. And if you don't want to travel far, the Rosarito Beach Hotel is much closer.

Anyone have a website or contact info for Campo LaJoya on Punta Banda?

Yeah, It's just me...I want to swim, though and Pyramid looks swimmer-unfriendly.

I don't believe they have a site. You don't want to swim there at this time. Been talk of some nasty water pollution and the other amenities in the area arn't anything like those we've discussed.
