Throw nets
Does anyone know what the law is regarding throw nets? We were at Campo Rene tossing a net for live bait and one of the pangueros came over and said
that it was prohibited for gringos to use one. At the time there were about 6 groups of Mexicans throwing nets for Lisa.

As I understand their laws the panguero was correct.

Yes, foreigners may not use nets. The #1 reason I may try and get citizenship. Even then, I bet they won't let me use one.
In Loreto, I've been told that captains cannot net sardinia bait for their clients; only the bait cooperative guys can net sardinias. $150 pesos for a
tank full.

Use of Sabiki rigs is within the law I believe.

Sabiki rigs work well for larger bait, but we were capturing bait that was only about 3in long. I was kind of surprised because I have been throwing
my net for 25 years in Baja and nobody has ever said anything to me about it before.

I suppose this law is
just like most other laws in Mx. Simply a matter of interpretation and enforcement.

He feels comfortable admonishing you because you're a tourist. But if you reminded him of the rules he's broken .... That would be altogether
different.

It is my understanding that it is indeed illegal for a gringo to use a cast net.
I have one but I suck at throwing it. I think the locals would let me throw it all I want, not much of a threat of depleating the fishery and a lot of
fun to watch.....dt

Just another case of it being illegal to do but there was little or no enforcement. On the other side at Campo Rene, La Bocana, Abreojos, and
probably Asuncion, things are a little tighter in terms of followin the laws. While people on the Sea of Cortez side have ignored limits for years, I
certainly would not suggest trying that on the Pacific side. Maybe that is why the fishing is so good over there, they are truly trying to keep their
fishery alive and well.

I have never been scolded for using mine in La Bocana. Maybe because I'm so bad at it. I'm entertainment for the REAL fishermen.
It is illegal.
