Travel Route from New Mexico to Loreto?
What is the best route to get from Interstate 10 to Mexico 1? Where to cross the border?
Is Mexico 2 from Nogales an option?

10 to West of Phoenix, then Hgwy 85 South to 8, then West to 805, then South to the San Ysidro Border, then MX Hgwy 1.
Or, take the Buckman Springs Rd. South from 8 (East of El Cajon) to 94 (Campo Rd.). West on 94 to Tecate Rd. (188), then South to the Border.
Nogales is not an option to Hgwy 1.

An interesting option would be driving to Nogales then south to Hermasillo to Guaymas/San Carlos, Mexico ....and book passage on the car ferry to
Santa Rosalia on the Baja peninsula.
Guaymas is only about 3 1/2 - 4 hours hours from Nogales and very good 4 lane highway. From Santa Rosalia to Loreto ..figure a little over 2 1/2
hours.
Also you will not have to make the drive from Taos to Tecate...about 900 miles...and then the 700-plus mile drive down Baja to Loreto.
A. About 1600 road miles from Taos to Loreto via US Interstate to Tecate.
B. About 950 road miles from Taos to Nogeles to Loreto via Guaymas ferry.
Note: The car ferry is not quick. You have to be at the dock many hours before sailing time. If rough weather, it could be cancelled.
I did the ferry route roundtrip for about 15 years and had some 'experiences.' (good weather and storms!) Back then, I had a very beautiful friend,
Evangelina, who ran the ticket office at Guaymas. In those days nobody could make a 'reservation' ahead of time. You just showed up and took your
chances....and sometimes waited for 2-3 days for an opening. I became aware that Evangelina's passion was music boxes..and I always brought her one.
When I appeared on scene out of the blue, she would smile at me and wave me to the head of the line of waiting tourists.
I think some travelers caught on...because years later, when Evangelina came to Mulege to manage the Pemex station, she told me she had over a hundred
music boxes.
Although I've not made that crossing in probably 25 years, I am assuming it is still operational.

but get the vehicle permit at nogales.

The ferry option really does cut down on the wear and tear factor as well as road fatigue. Know this, however, the ferry only runs Tuesdays and
Fridays. Will cost about $100 for a standard vehicle and $10-$20 per person depending upon the class you choose.

Don't think those prices are current. $27.50 per person and $248.00 a regular vehicle.

Great information. Thanks for all the help. We have been to Guaymas/San Carlos a number of times so getting to the ferry is straightforward. If we
have an itch to see Baja Norte, it might be smart to take the ferry going down and return north via Mexico 1.

besides the prices, the vehicle permit has changed, too. no sticker required for Nogales to Guaymas area, and none in Baja. permit is only required
if further south into mainland. and I believe, though it may be old info, too, that one must leave the same port of entry as entry with sticker.
reality\'s never been of much use out here...
