How do I get from Otay to Ensenada
We'll be crossing at Otay in a couple of weeks hauling a large trailer. After going through the import mess, we'll be continuing to and past
Ensenada. I haven't been through Otay Mesa since before Blvd. 2000 was built. I remember it was difficult to find our way and we were lucky enough
to find a local Mexican to guide us to the toll road.
I know things have changed quite a bit since we've been through there, and I definitely don't want to get lost an have to turn this big thing around
somewhere in traffic.
What's the best route to the toll road? Can someone please give me detailed instructions?
There are some older posts with routing, but I don't know if they are still valid.
Also some have mentioned they like to cross over to the Tecate road. Is that better?
Thanks,
Wooo

From Otay to Highway 1 (Free road or Toll Road)..........
When you cross the border through Otay, get into the left lane and proceed straight for approximately 1 mile to the first stoplight. This is
Industrial Blvd. There is a tire shop on your left at this intersection.
Turn left at this light (you will proceed approximately 4 miles on Industrial Blvd), proceed up and over the new business district bypass bridge. As
you come down from the bridge you will be at a stoplight intersection with a school to your left. (remember this intersection for the return trip).
Pass under the PANASONIC footbridge and continue straight on Industrial Blvd.
After about 4 miles fron the tire shop where you turned onto Industrial Blvd, you will see signs indicating the road vering to the left for the toll
road to Tecate, and signs that indicate the road vering to the right to Popotla/Rosarito. I think it's signed as BC Highway 201.
Veer to the right and take this road (BC 201/Blvd 2000) for approximately 26 miles. Follow the signs indicating....Popotla/Rosarito/Ensenada.
This road (Blvd 2000/Highway 201) will put you out at the free road at Popotla, just south of the Fox Baja Studios.
For Rosarito, turn right. For Ensenada, turn Left. Take any Toll Road on-ramp headed south to Ensenada.
You will only encounter one toll booth at the north end of Ensenada.
To head north reverse these directions.....Exit the toll road at the Puerto Nuevo exit. Follow the free road to Popotla, and turn right onto highway
201/Blvd 2000.
Follow the signs to Otay/San Diego....As you come off of Blvd 2000 onto Industrial Blvd, either continue up and over the business district
bypass.....this will put you back on Industrial at a McDonalds.......continue straight to the stoplight where the tire shop is and turn right, proceed
1 mile to the border gates.....
OR, if you have a SENTRI pass.......on Industrial at the stoplight by the school just before you go up and over the bypass bridge (remember, see
above).....turn right at this light (before you go over the bypass).
Proceed straight about 3 - 4 blocks to a main street named Bella Artes (stoplight intersection). Turn left onto Bella Artes. Just before you go under
the bridge (the border lanes) turn right like you are going into the car wash on the corner.....proceed up that street to the SENTRI Crossing.
Bajaguy sent these to me about a year ago - I think they are still accurate.

If you are in SD, the tecate' route will take longer.
The road is a scenic 2-lanes that leads you to Mex 1 about 10 miles north of Ensenada.
The big difference at Tecate' is the lack of "big city" rush and anxiety.
"import mess" ????
You may not be able to do your imports at Tecate'.

Take the Tecate road, Wooo. It's so much more scenic and tranquil, especially after the recent rain.

Thank you Santiago. The only post I could seem to find was from David K. back in '07. I wasn't sure if that was still accurate.
We will be crossing at Otay because of the importing we'll be doing. Not at Tecate. I had read some older posts where some people crossed at Otay
then went over to the Tecate road to make the trip to Ensenada. I was curious if that was a better route, but it seems that the instructions Santiago
gave were pretty simple and straight forward.
Thanks

Minor change
At the present time, the only change to the above directions is that you will have to access the toll road at Cantimar, not Puerto Nuevo due to toll
road construction.......just drive south from Puerto Nuevo to Cantimar

Santiago's post is golden, along with bajaguy. Since you mentioned hauling a large trailer, I don't know if you'd want to mess with the Tecate road.
Not to mention that if you are hauling a bunch of stuff to declare, they might just send you back West, anyway.

BLVD. 2000 (BC #201)
I posted this on the Nomad Road Conditions forum in 2007... should be close, still... Photos of the various points in that thread... http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=24396
MEXICO at Otay Border: Mile 0.0, Time 0:0
Head straight south, staying in left lanes. Follow signs for TECATE.
LEFT TURN at signal, slight curve to left just before signal: Mile 1.1, Time 0:03
Heading east on Blvd. Industrial... soon becomes divided highway!
Take new highway south, signed for Rosarito, Popotla, Ensenada (toll highway 2-D to Tecate curves to left, see toll gate, Big Horn Sheep monument
almost unseen heading south): Mile 6.0, Time 0:13
Free Hwy. 2 (TECATE) interchange, continue south then southwest: Mile 13.0, Time 0:22
Cross the Rodriguez/ Tijuana reservoir and head into the hills...
Pass under the toll highway (Mex. 1-D) and come to the free highway (Mex. 1)... Mile 31.3, Time 0:38.
They will have it connected to the toll highway, but that work seems stalled. Too bad, but until then go a few miles on the free road to almost Puerto
Nuevo where you can hop on the toll road for free.
Fox Baja Studio entrance is just to your right, Puerto Nuevo and access onto the toll highway is about 6 miles to your left.

My light bulb may not be shining at a full 100 watts, but I think I've got the directions down
Thanks for the help everyone.
After getting ridiculous quotes from movers, we decided to buy a cargo trailer and do the importing ourselves in a couple of weeks. When we finally
get organized down there I'll post how it went.
