Boat license
Boat license
Is this correct.....I needn't to license my 14 boat but to license everyone in the boat with a fishing license?
".....Effective January 2008, boat fishing permits are no longer required for vessels practicing sport fishing in Mexican waters".

Hi Mcfez and welcome to nomadlandia...
this is correct...no more boat license...but make sure you have all your registration, K numbers etc on hand in case of inspections and have your
fishing license on you when you fish and make sure you are aware of the limits...have fun!!!

FYI Historically, while visiting Baja, you should carry the proper reg of the region from which you hail, if the small boat is a tender to a larger
yacht a registration is not required and when it is not a tender to a yacht, reg numbers are required only when it is motorized or powered by sail. A
row boat does not require reg, generally. Kayaks for example do not carry reg in california and many other states. So that's why you see many small
boats with the letters T/ or T/T in front of the name meaning tender or tender to the tender of the named yacht and therefore no reg numbers or
sticker.

Recently when crossing southbound in San Yisidro I have been asked to show my registration for boat, trailer and they have tried to find the engine
serial number on the registration which of coarse is not recorded on the reg. They do not use the CF numbers, by the way, as they are looking for
stolen boats being brought into Mexico and anyone could make those match - they want the VIN. I haven't a clue as to where the VIN is on my boat and
eventually they give up and wave me through.

It is true that in the past two years no boat license is required. I was skeptical when I first heard it, but it was confirmed when I went in
for my fishing license. I wonder why they gave up all that revenue?

The HIN, or Hull Identification Number is stamped into the hull, generally located on the outboard (waterside) of the transom, can be on the upper
right, or starboard side.

I have a 15.5 foot self bailing fiberglass runabout with a 40 HP outboard and a 8hp kicker on it.
Are you all saying that I can drive this boat on its trailer from California to La Paz and use it for fishing the baja and I don't need any kind of
Mexican permits, except for a current Mexican fishing license for myself and current California DMV registration for the trailer and for the boat?
What about liability insurance for the boat and trailer? Is there a Mexican legal requirement for that?

Yes, that's what we are saying. Make sure that the boat/trailer is listed on your auto policy w/ zero value if you only want it to be covered for
liability while it's being towed. You will still not have boat liability once it's off the trailer, but that should not be a problem in 99% of the
places in Baja. I guess some marinas have this requirement if you're getting a slip. I don't know anyone who has boat liability for their under 20'
trailerable fishing boats but I'm sure someone does.
