A/C Smell
We have two Mitshubishi units in our casa...a 1.5 and 2.5 ton. Before leaving last July we had both units serviced and cleaned. Only the 2.5 ton
needed a little freon. Upon returning in October we noticed a "musty" smell coming from the 2.5 ton when it is turned on. It goes away after a
minute or two. No problem with it cooling...just the initial smell on start-up.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Just a guess
I'd think it's coming from water condensation or possibly mold in the duct works.

Think that is something a little bleach water flush into the line would fix and is that easy to "DIY"?
I forgot to say we have had these units for three years with no problems. Wonder how/why it would start forming condensation now, if that is the
problem?

What line?
Is this a swamp cooler?
If so, your problem is probably rancid water and mold.

Make sure the drain on the condenser isn't blocked.

Dave,
Me thinks this is getting above my head...maybe I should get my husband to explain, but here goes!
No not a swamp cooler...Mitshubishi A/C mini-split freon unit. There is a drain line and when we were remodling that line was run under the tile into
the shower. That is why I was thinking a little bleach water pushed into the drain line would solve the problem. Then again I don't know how easy it
is to get to that line. That is what I was hoping to find out.

I'm no expert here, but I cannot conceive of a drain line problem providing a foul smell only when the unit is running. Filters???

Filters are cleaned monthly...been there done that...still smells.
Hubby has an A/C guy coming in the AM...keep you posted.

Karenintx, It's a sealed system. the problem has to be with inside air handling unit, not the compressor. There's probably some stale water
condensation. There's no 'make up' air, right? circulation comes from inside air?

Some years ago condensation that supported fungus (moulds) was the suspected source/cause for a respiratory illness called "Legionnaire's
Disease".....
It makes you wear a funny hat, smoke Gitannes, and and run off to join an army in the desert....but also turns you into a tough guy....probably with
a drinking problem

All refrigeration ACs whether in homes or cars, circulate air over cooling fins. Moisture and dust can and do stick to these areas, and that mixture
molds and stinks. Make sure your unit has an open drain, and then treat the cooling fins with a solution of light detergent in 50% water, 50% bleach.
Keeping this area clean will solve your odor problem. Now... getting rid of the bleach smell... either start with odorized bleach, or rinse your
cleaning job with more sprayed water mixed with Fabreze heavy duty.
