Prescription drugs
We take a couple of expensive prescriptions for high cholesterol and our current health insurance does not cover prescriptions. I'm wondering if the
Mexican pharmacies will allow a large purchase ie 11 or 12 months worth? Or, if they limit purchases to a 90 day supply if there is anything keeping
us from visiting a couple different pharmacies. Thanks Ron

Your problem could be US Customs--- The snowbirds that buy their meds in Algodones--enough for a year or more, usually cross the border more than
once. It is what we use to do for our Dog's meds.
We found that the pharmacies in Mexicali that were close to the border were more expensive, and I imagine that might be true in Tijuana????

Thanks. We will be in Baja for at least two months and will travel the full length so we could buy some in Mulege, more in Guerrero Negro, more in La
Paz, more in Todos Santos etc. Ron

I forgot to ask. Would US Customs have a problem as long as we had a valid prescription and disclosed all the purchases? Thanks Ron

Good question. I'll relate a tue story. I crossed northbound (walking) and declared to the immigration guy some anti-hypertensives I bought. He sent
me over to the customs guy. I explained that I read the guidelines on the customs website, and he said:
"I don't care what the website says, I make the rules here."
He then told me I was crazy to buy meds in Mexico because of course they were no good. Then he let me go, with the meds.

Suggestion, when in La Paz, take a look at the prices at Walmart pharmacy. I usually find their prices very competetive.

It is my understanding that by and large, customs will allow a three month supply of prescription drugs. I believe the rules don't actually require a
prescription per se, but that they require that you provide them with the name and address of the prescribing doctor.
That said, and in conjunction with Mitch's comment, the big box stores do have the best prices by far for generics.
I'm sure our resident Ensenada pharmacist will eventually chime in here.

Thanks. Generics are not our problem. The wife takes Zetia (10mg) for which there is not yet a generic alternative. We pay $102 for 30 pills at
Costco. (The same is $180 at Walgreens and $145 at Walmart.) We're hoping that the non-generics that we take may be cheaper in Baja. Thanks again. Ron
