Installing Broadband
Hi
We have a little place in san jose del cabo. We need to get wireless broadband put in there.
We have Sky TV can we add broadband to that? Or do we have to go with a phone company?
If so is there a recommended one? and any idea of the cost?

Go to Telcel and get Banda Ancha 3G, 430 pesos per month. It hooks into your computer with USB connection.

Just another thought, the little hotel close to us has broadband .... obviously I'm very happy to pay them, just reluctant to sign up for annual fees
when I am not here all year.
Is there a booster or something I can use to make it reach the few extra yards to me?

how about checking into the hotel for a night, and getting the password.. it might work.. would think they would change every once and a while, but I
have a few passwords from places which we have stayed in the past few months down here.. and can use them still... just a thought

Milligan, there are wi-fi extenders and antennae which can increase your range.

No the hotel are friends ... I have the password I'm using it now!
But I dont get a signal from my house .... which is just around the corner, I'd love to be able to work at home
without having to come over here. But I'm only here about 60 days a year so I dont want to sign an annual
contract for internet.
I'm happy to pay the hotel a bit though, and it wont cost them anything, so everyone would be happy.
Wifi extender / antennae sounds just right. I guess I have to buy it to find out if it works.
Any recommendations regarding the best/ strongest one?

Milligan,
I believe that extenders only work if they are installed on the sending side. Haven't found one yet that increases the receiving end. If you do, I
like to know about it.

Yes, just looking at that now. I could install it on the sending side (I think!)
I'm just looking at options and there are things out there that claim I can just plug into my macbook pro via usb and they will pick up 300% better.
But I need more info

Do you have a Mexican phone line when you are there? If so you could use a DSL connection. I don't know what they charge to turn it off and on when
you leave and return. Perhaps pay for the phone line year round and just turn off and on the DSL service. Doing that you could use a TCP/IP service
like Vonage or Skype and maintain a phone number with any US area code you like.

using iChat now ... works just fine.. with both a/v
