Our Verizon phones work in border to Ensenada, La Paz, San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. All for $1.00 a min.

verizon service

My verizon phone worked in the Loreto area 3-4 years ago with no problems.... But no good the last few. I have gotten an ATT phone which works with great service.

I did and have the Mexico service added to my verizon account but didn't work for me in baja, that includes Tijuana. They, "verizon" do have an activation process that you enter before Baja but that didn't work...

ATT is the way to go.

att gets service anywhere there is a stop light, and many out of the way places too. nextel only works to ensenada....

YMMV

edit: my roaming charge is .84/min or so.

I have an ATT plan for Baja for 50 bucks a month. They give me 450 anytime, roaming, rollover minutes. These minutes work in Baja.

Is the plan you have the "North America Plan?" If so, they do not offer that any longer. If you have another plan or recently got the plan you are talking about, please let me know.

The AT&T plan I have is great, but no longer available to new customers and I am grandfathered in. $39.95 a month for 1,000 anytime minutes and they rollover. I pay another $5.95 a month and I can make calls in and out of Baja for .59 a minute but I like you plan better.

If Verizon charges $1/minute and you gotta be in a metro area I don't see its advantage over a sat phone...we have an Iridium that works anywhere in the world to anywhere in the world for $1.25 per minute. The phone costs a few hundred bucks but it's the best insurance policy you can get in Baja...especially if you fly a small plane.....Mexican "flight plans" do not trigger a search if you don't show up as scheduled as in the USA...the only reason for the flight plans in Mexico are to charge for the flight plan?? So, if your engine quits and you land in a canyon in the boonies numba ten thou you are screwed if you can't communicate.

I've used the sat phone in downtown San Felipe too when I really needed !! to talk to somebody and couldn't screw around with the little tricks of a cell phone in Baja.

Could you share where you bought this phone? And is it a flat $1.25 a minute or do you also pay a per month charge. I just looked them up and they are over $1000 bux.

Thx

Since you bring it up, guess I'm dense, but I've never understood that insult (MoFo). Aren't most fathers... uhh.... :?:

When I said the att phone works south of San felipe, I meant we get service the calls have been very clear. We can call any where into the states with no extra charges.

SenorBaja!
It totally depends on where you're going in Baja. History for me is, south of Ensenada, Verizon has NO Coverage! Mulege-some coverage, La paz- has coverage, some of the East Cape and most all of Cabo has coverage.
Verizon for me is not worth it for Baja. I bought a pay as you go Tel-Cel phone (10 bucks and purchase the 200-500 peso cards) and have great coverage all up/down Baja. As stated, ATT has good coverage as well.
I bought a Verizon phone (the phone MUST be unlocked though, or will not work) that has a SIM card, put in the SIM from Mexican cell phone and tried using it, but it was not worth it as calling VM it would call the states, etc........easier for me to just continue using the 10 dollar Tel-Cel phone.

you would think, but Verizon does not have a contract with TelCel and that is who the phone needs to roam on in our area (San Felipe)

I travel with my buddy with an AT&T international plan. He gets service the entire length of Baja. It piggy backs off TelCel towers. Verizon, like others say only work in larger cities.

My AT&T has always worked around San Felipe for the last 9 years. I noticed on this last trip that they must have recently partnered with Movistar instead of Telcel. Buck a minute with no extra monthly.
