Internet/Sat. TV Service So. of San Felipe

I am looking into internet and satellite TV services for my campo in Bahia Santa Maria. The satellite TV services are pretty cut and dry...DISH or DIRECT (although I would be glad to here your opinions on them as well), it is the internet access choices that are not as clear to me. My research on this site and the internet indicate that Hughes Net might be the only option.

How are others getting this accomplished around that area? Do you think my dish can be the standard size? I surmise that I need to apply for these two services from a USA address and then install them in Baja....

Any words of wisdom are appreciated!

I have DISH and it is a piggy back account (5th TV) from my service in San Diego. We get just about the same channels in Playa Hermosa as we do in San Diego including one San Diego local news channel (xetv). Standard dish, no problems since my Feb. '09 installation. Had DirecTV prior to that for ten years, worked well too, standard dish.

Neighbors up and down the beach seem to be using Hughes for Internet.

Haven't had a bad trip yet....

If you go to the sat place in San Felipe (Shanes) across from Fandangos next to the old ReMax office, they can provide you with sat tv (and a US address) and hughesnet. Unfortunately for your internet that is going to be your option. Hugesnet sucks but it's better than nothing.

You can also get sat tv from Eclipse (Vinces place) on Chetumal across the street from Rabbit Pizza - close to the new Bancomer

Personally I like Starband for internet better than Hughes. Starband has just come out with a new deal, you don't have to buy the equipment up front, you can basically rent to own. So no large payment upfront to get started. Also they are coming out with a voip service that will greatly improve what you get through skype and magicjack. Max, aka bajabus is a dealer and can give you more details.

Borregoman. Do a search for starband on this forum, lots of info. I am driving down sometime around the end of Jan or 1st week of Feb. I would be happy to deliver and install it for you. Contact me privately with your exact long/lat for specifics.

Also check out www.starband-users.com

Month to Month Contract?

With either of these internet satellite services, is there the ability to have the service for specific months (like when I am here) and not pay for the service when I am not? Or are you committed to a monthly fee regardless....?

Not sure how HN does it but with starband, after your initial contract term you can put the system on vacation as often as you want. There is a $50 fee to turn it back on.

Another option that works for me is to get a second sat internet antenna, one for your place in Baja and one for your home in the US and then take your modem back and forth with you. That way you do not have to pay for 2 services.
