You need to be a bit more specific as there are many different jelly like critters that inhabit these waters.

clear jelly with a dark reddish brown eye or maybe nucleus. Streaks of purplish colour in the water. Lots of mobullas jumping, wondering if that's related??

Squid will shoot a spout of water several feet from their bodies when they surface. Is this happening?

I have a similar experience. Just a few weeks back on the pacific side, near G. Negro, there were thousands of black/purple "ball-like" larva with two long strings off the back end. They had small little flippers which propelled them. I would say they were no larger than 3/8 diameter. Anyone know what these were?

Sounds like you might be describing the small jellyfish commonly called "agua mala". A jelly-like round bubble for a body, about 1-2" in diameter, with a single purple tentacle about 4-6" long.

Darn good guess.

They were pretty hard shelled. I shoulda took some pictures. I picked them up, there were literally thousands of them in the water, and quite a few washed up on the beach.

My guess, pelagic tunicates? Salps possibly.

I'm no authority...but those tunicates that are thick at the East Cape right now look like salps. salpa maxima perhaps?
