Puertecitos ?

I am taking the g/f and another couple to San Felipe this weekend and I keep hearing about Puertecitos. What is there? Is it worth a trip to see? It will be carnival in SF so I figured that would keep us busy enough but if it's worth a trip to see Puertecitos let me know.

Thanks- a la frontera

Don't worry you will have plenty of time to do EVERYTHING. Carnival is fun but only at night. Puertecitos is an easy drive and you can hit the hot springs there at low tide. On your way south to Puertecitos you can stop at the Giant Cactus if they are open. Then stop at Percebu at KM 22 for a cold one or three and then on to Puertecitos with plenty of time to spare. Check here for the tide chart so you know when to hit the hot springs. http://www.sanfelipe.com.mx/weather/feb.html

Carlos Fiesta does a pretty good job with describing Baja places on his web site... Go to http://BajaExpo.com

If you go to Puertecitos ask if we can park a truck there for 10 to 12 days the 1st week of March? & how much for parking?
Is the motel and restaurant open March?

I think Percebu is closed. There's a new highway south of Puertacitas that's supposed to be a nice 20 mile drive.

Frankly, I don't think Puertecitos is worth the drive for that destination per se. But en route you can make stops to enjoy a nice beach, explore, and past Puertecitos and there are some nice little coves, do some shore fishing. You'll see. Bring all food, water for the day.

Maybe he doesn't know what a PM is? (actually called a U2U on Nomad... a Private Message system for Nomads to message other Nomads... look at the upper right corner of the Nomad page... in blue, if you have a unread message, there will be a notification... CLICK on it, and a small window will pop up and there you can read, reply, delete your private messages/ u2us)

I agree with Wilderone. I would not call Puertecitos a destination to just go and see....I did that in Dec. :-) Just wanted to see how far the new road went. We did enjoy the drive itself and went beyond Puertecitos as far as we could go in our rental car....down to where you can see the small islands. Does anyone know how much farther the road goes now?

The last Nomad to actually report a mileage put it at 12-14 south, with new roadbed on to Huerfanito (mile 20), then soon on the un-repaired graded road to Gonzaga (20-25 miles of rough)

Me and 7 other vehicles went for a ride from San Felipe to Alfonsina's (Gonzaga Bay) and back on Monday. From the turn off to Puertecitos to where we had to turn off the payment (the paved road was blocked) was around 20 miles. Around the El Huerfanito area. The last few miles of payment had no line markings so I think it is new. From there we were on the old road. Could not tell how much further the payment went. Had a good lunch and a few beers at Alfonsina's and then headed back to San Felipe. Got home just before dark. By the way the new paved road is really nice.

Bajacrawler is correct, the new pavement ends about a quarter of a mile west of the road into "Tanos" fish camp, at Huerfanitos. And it ends very abruptly with about a ten foot drop off with no barracade! No new pre road existing at this time (President's day weekend), and the rumor around the Cow Patty (bar in Puertecitos) is that the money hasn't been allocated yet to continue. However it looks like all the equipment is still in place ready to go when they get the nod. The old road on in to Gonzaga Bay is a little rougher than normal due to some of the washes running recently. Things are greened up pretty good but not to much in the way of flowers yet. Camera went on the blink.. lo siento

So, the entire 20 miles over the volcanic ridges between Puertecitos and El Huerfanito is done?! Amazing...

The sign back near San Felipe, where your turn off the airport road, only gives distance to Huerfanito and nothing beyond... who knows?
