tecate to los barrilles to todos santos to tecate
Patty and I just got back into the States from spending about 5 weeks traveling baja norte and sur in a 31' motorhome. Stayed at many of the larger
campgrounds and also some time boondocking. Rather than trying to give info on the various subject lines if anybody has any specific questions that
relate to current conditions etc feel free to ask. We had a great trip and our only regret is we couldn't find Pickle and return him to Amy!!

Hola,
thank you very much for your travel report.
how were the road conditions from tecate to ensenada and how many miles is the construction itself ?
is the construction in the mountains or in the flats ?
i am planning on crossing at tecate on march 7 heading to los barriles in a small suv and pulling a 5' X 8" enclosed utility trailer.
depending on the rains this weekend. if it rains, i may have to delay my trip for a couple of days. what do you suggest ?

Road was very good. There is a lot of new highway. No problems in the mountains. There is about a 2 mile stretch that they are working on that is dirt
and dusty but took us than than 5 minutes to pass thru. Then there is about a 6 mile stretch that is paved but you drive on the shoulder area next to
the new pavement which is curing. We still safely drove 35-40mph on that stretch. We stopped to let the dogs out once during the stretch from Ensenada
to Tecate and that part of the trip took less than 90 minutes. We waited until the last gas station on Hwy 3 to gas up (gas in Mexico is much cheaper)
so we could get as much of the cheap gas as possible. Turned out not to be the best decision because the price per litre increased from 7.65pesos to
7.93. We got gas many times on the trip and with the exception of this last fill up gas was always 7.65/litre. This is the first time we crossed back
in the states at Tecate and it took longer than expected. We sat in line for about 2 hours before being sent to secondary because we had an orange and
some dog food. If you're taking a dog and have dog food when you return be sure to keep the bag that the dry dog food came in. We were in secondary
for well over an hour because they caught an American with drugs and they had 5 agents and a drug dog tied up on that car for about 45 minutes. Have a
great trip- in general the roads are fine with the exception of the usual pot holes and no shoulders. Ron

The Pemex thing: Although the price is regulated and literally the same throughout the country, there is a dispensation for border area stations.

Yes on the fuel. I also forgot to mention that at this station the pump that I drove to was marked "full service." I had filled up at other stations
marked "full service" and the price was still 7.65p/litre but that might have had something to do with it.

Back when gas in the US was hitting astronomical highs, we were coming back from a Baja trip, and although I had half a tank, I pulled into a Pemex on
Bl. Industrial right across from the McDonalds right by the Otay crossing. They actually had two prices. One for Mexicans and one for Gringos. Not
sure if the local franchisee was trying to be a profiteer, of whether it was a Pemex dictate, as in that time, lots of folks were driving across the
border to fill, because of the tremendous price differential. Fundamentally, the Pemex price at that station for non-Mexican plated vehicles equated
to the price NOB. And for the most part, full service is the norm. I have been to a few self-service places over the years, but, they are few and far
between.
