Bandwidth Meter????
We are considering the Banda Ancha to use in Baja and the different plans allow different about of usage.
In the past, someone posted a link to a free meter so one can test how much bandwidth one is using in a month. I had it on my old computer.
Now I would like to have it on my new computer but do not remember the name.

I will check out the one's Dennis posted, but you are correct---it is the monthly tracking I am looking for as I am considering the Banda Ancha for
Baja. I am still very computer illiterate so it is difficult to ask for the correct item.

I've never seen such a thing, but I'd like to. I do know internet providers will throttle your internet connection down (slow it) if you
download/upload lots of huge files like movies- but I've never seen a way to track it by household or computer.

The Telcel Amigo (prepaid) banda ancha account now has an online usage counter (was added within the past month).
Sign up to access the customer portal online, I've written some instructions at:
http://www.sanfelipelife.com/post/Check-your-Telcel-Amigo-ac...
Then under "Alta de servicios" and "Consulta" you will see your usage this month, and how much you have remaining (currently, there's a typo on one of
the figures that says MB rather than GB, ignore that). And it's more useful than anything you could put on your computer or router as it's what they
think you have used, which is what counts here.
Note that this month the dropping of the speed to a lower level when you run out appears to have ended. When you use all the data, all access stops,
as far as I can tell. I'll find out when I hit the limit again in a couple more weeks...

I will be real interested in what happens when you hit the limit---please post it.
Since the telcel office in our town does not have a clue about any of this, we are going to try and purchase the banda ancha in Ensenada on the way
south---hope that works!

I be dead in the water on day two of the month if my nieces and nephews are playing on YouTube or video conferencing the family on the mainland. A
complete shutdown seems unreasonable though- IMO they should still allow e-mails and low-bandwidth uses to get through.

There is another way to look at it - you're buying 30 days or 3GB, whichever comes first.
I've been getting through my 3GB in about 3 weeks (with careful use, no video). And there was no way to buy a fresh month of access until the first
month expired, so the only choices were to put up with the slower speeds or switch to a second sim card for the remaining week (and buy one week
access on the second sim which works out more per day).
I'd like the option to start a fresh 30days/3GB immediately the first one runs out, on the same sim. I'll find out if that is the case later this
month.
Movistar made some major changes to their rates last month, in some cases they are better value for data than Telcel now, and that probably inspired
Telcel to make changes. (where I am Movistar doesn't have 3G, as far as I am aware, so not of any interest to me).

I use McAfee for security, in it's tools it has a traffic monitor that tells you how much bandwidth you've used this month and your total for last
month.

My wife just got off the phone with Carlos Slim, besides the 3GB for $433 they also offer 5GB for $449 and 10GB for $599. On the 5GB and the 10GB
plans they cut you off if you go over but you can go online and buy more bandwidth. If you go over on the 3GB plan they just slow you down. They have
me slowed down now, it takes a little longer to load stuff but the only time it bothers me is when I try and watch a video. Usually it takes me about
3 weeks to hit the 3GB limit so we will probably change to the 5GB plan next month. The cost for extra bandwidth is: 100MB=$46.89, 500MB=190.82,
1GB=238.27.

The "slowing down when your limit has been reached" seems to have been dropped for all levels.

This will give me more of an idea of what to try and buy in Ensenada.
One of the workers in the local BA Tel-Cel told me that if I bought everything in Ensenada, I could still make my payments at the local tel-cel office
and I could pay in advance. Anyone know more about that?
As stated on another thread, trying to get this banda ancha service at the TelCel office in BA is next to impossible----they want bank statements,
check stubs, FM3s, letter of residency and on and on. Every time they call La Paz, a new requirement appears.
