Asuncion
Thinking about a first time trip to Ascuncion in June and wondering what the drive is like, as far as time from the border, road condition? And i know
this is probably out of line, but some directions to some surf would be reallly cool.

It would be a long drive for 1 day. You could probably make it if you cross the border before daylight and don't mess around. Being summer there will
be more daylight hours so its possible. Better to make it 2 days, stay in El Rosario if you get a late start, Gurerro Negro if you head out early. The
road is fine, paved almost all the way. I think there is about 8 or 10 miles of gravel road left before Asuncion. Lots of pot holes in the road
between Viscaino and the turn off to Asuncion, go slow. Juan and Shari can fix you up with accommodations and local advise.
Directions to surf?????......ummmm......uhhhhhh.......no.
You will find some North, South and West from Asuncion, Shari will probably point you in the right direction as long as you have a surf board, leave
your GPS behind and promise not to mention the location on line.
Drive safe and have fun.....dt

In this case, there are no surf secrets.
The main surf beach, Punta Choros is a couple of miles south of town going toward Abreojos and the turn off is marked with a sign. Locals used to
keep it more of a secret, but not anymore.
Beautiful area, soft sand, and plenty of places to set up camp. Free camping and safe.
Also, sometimes there is surfing, albeit smaller surf, right in front of our house---just drive through town. Some people also camp there.
Ask anyone in town and they will happily give you directions.
We make the drive in two days, but some do it in one long day---depends on how much you like to drive and how much you stop. Best not to drive after
dark, so plan accordingly.

Go to your local surf shop and pick up " A Surfer's Guide to Baja" by Mike Parise, or maybe check Amazon. There are no secret surf spots in Baja
anymore, maybe in the 70's but it's all known knowlege now.

How dare you post an avatar like that!! Did you kill it?? What are your feelings about catch and release anyway? Insulting, truely insulting. These
are not the good old days anymore and Baja is going to hades... or conversely is it the best of times and you are worn on either account.
There, I just wanted to give you a proper Nomad welcome. Glad to have you aboard.

I'm looking forward to my de-virginization. Weird, spell check says that isn't a word. Oh well. Thanks for the welcome. I didn't kill that particular Dorado, somebody else got to. But I sure would like to slay one
soon.
