I'm suspecting that you don't really get lost. There's a turn-off that takes traffic on to via international that runs along the border fence (Mex-1D). However, I'm assuming that you miss the ramp and keep going straight. That's OK, because the road is Segunda. They both end up at the same place. Segunda just gives you more of a flavor of the city and, of course, more traffic lights.

There are so many signs that say 'San Diego, Garita, I-5, etc.' that to miss them, you would need to be driving blind... Of course, there are plenty of distractions...

If you want to use the road along the border fence to avoid downtown TJ, then after you turn away from the coast... north of the final toll gate, stay in the right lane... The border route will exit off to your right AFTER the signed Tecate/Mexicali exit (used to be the same exit)... on the far side of the long bridge. It is signed for San Diego, etc.

Good luck!

OK, CHECK THIS... Fred Metcalf just reported some issues with the typical route northbound... read: http://math.ucr.edu/~ftm/bajaPages/MsgBoard/messages/1939.ht...
