Travelers checks are so last century. You'll have more difficulty using them than you would imagine. Use ATMs.

I disagree. I carry traveler's checks as a safety net reserve fund. I have never came back and said, "Damn, I wish I didn't bring those." Any bank
will cash them. I keep about two hundred visible in my wallet along with about 30 dollars cash visible. I'll pay whomever demands payment from me, but
I'll need to know whose name to write the checks out to. They'll just tell you to go ahead on your way with a warning. Of course I certainly wouldn't
bring traveler's checks as my sole source of funds.

i agree "Travelers checks are so last century"
they are treated like a check here
just bring your atm card
you may want to call the bank to mark your account that you'll be using it on vacation in mexico
stop at the border and change dollars to pesos for gas

Travelers checks can be a good way to transfer money to a Mexican bank. We get free travelers checks from our bank in the states and bring them down
and deposit them in our Mexican account avoiding any transfer fees. Also since they are checks you can avoid the 2% Mexican tax on cash deposits of
over 15000 pesos in a calender month.

travlers checks
I am only looking to convert dollars to pesos, in the bank. I will not be using outside of the bank. I need to convert about $2000 to pesos. From post
above, seems to be no problem at the banks with the travelers checks?

Well if anyone stops here we Accept traveler check. Still good at the Posada Don Diego in Vicente Guerrero. We would rather have them then credit
cards.

The casas de cambio are still taking dollars. The rate is lower but at least you can get pesos for your dollars. There is one in the Mega complex in
San Jose. They were giving 11.40 yesterday. Maybe someone from San Lucas knows where one is there.

actually the banks were holding dollars
then they would flood the market for profit
devaluing the peso
the govt stopped this process to stablize the peso
now the peso will flucuate with the mexican economy instead of
bank manulipation
remember we are talking billions
have you noticed the peso getting stronger?
this has happened ONLY since the banks have stopped exchanging dollars

Hola, i disagree. i do watch the peso float and it has been strong for the past couple of months or more before this nonsense started. but, i have no
idea how this will impact the peso. only time will tell.
gossip has it that the government is trying to stop the money laundering from the drug cartels as they bring in billions of u.s. dollars into mexico.

drug dollars stay as dollars
safer that way
the amount exchanged by them is "chump change"

I think you're right about that. Except for some walking around change, just doesn't seem logical that the drug guys would do anything like a
wholesale exchange from dollars to pesos.

Forget the travelers checks and use your debit card for all your transactions. After many years exchanging dollars to pesos this is the best method by
far. My only suggestion is only use ATM's that are directly connected to a bank in their building. If you have any problems there will be someone you
can talk to, other wise you will have to straighten out any problems with your bank in the states.
Have a great trip!

Get a Schwab checking account. Their ATM card reimburses you for any fees or charges. I use mine all over the world including Mexico. Ditto on
Costco in Chula Vista. I have 2 $100 travelers checks I've had in my wallet for 20 years for an emergency. Hmmm - I wonder if they are still good?
