Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the
condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after it's stop in New York. This
would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The
ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its
delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this
day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.
HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO!!

Around here the schools are still out---nice 5 day weekend for the kids.
But seems everyone else is working---even the Delegacion that was closed on Monday and Tuesday. Now if they will just do what they promised
us---maybe they will use Cinco de Mayo as an excuse.
Unless it is close to the border, I think most of the best Cinco de Mayo celebrations are north of the border.

Good one, Timo
I remember back in the '50's CINCO DE MAYO was a very big deal indeed in my home town of Coronado, across the bay from San Diego. We usually
caravanned down to Ensenada for the "festivities", or at least TJ----------very fond memories!!! What a blast!!!!
If we could not get away, we had a huge beach party------all fun. To this day I just "feel good" on Cinco de Mayo, and wish our friends to the south
(and up here in the USA) a great day!!!!
Racist feelings, for sure!!!!

This one's for you Barry
Growing up in the same area. I too have fond memories of celebrating "Cinco de Mayo" for reasons i can't remember. BUT it was fun. Since when do Nomads need a reason to celebrate?

Is this not a NOB special day? Methinks most Mexicans could give a ratsass about it. It's not their independence day. Perhaps in Puebla.
It's really all about Corona, not the French.

Sharks,
Sound a little cranky. Why not have a Cinco de Mayo 20% off special, or 2 for 1 Shrimp c-cktails?
Groundhog Day, Secretaries Day, Mother's Day all good opportunities to boost sales.

If Mexico had defeated Arizona instead of the French at Puebla- they'd be celebrating in the streets! Maybe next year.
Schools closed here in Rosarito all week, even colleges. No one knows why but the kids aren't complaining- just the mothers. I did see that Cinqo de
Miracle Whip ad- but liked the sinking of the mayonnaise better.

My daughters were telling Tia Lupe, who is visiting from La Paz, about cinco de mayo last night, and she said, "What's that?"
Guess the mayo company, the beer companies, and El Toritos thought it up!

It is not a paid holiday here but a legal one. the paid holiday was on the 1st. of May. Which fell on Sat. so the teachers want a day because of that.
the only school open in Vicente Guerrero was the Catholic High School. everything closed until Thursday. Then Mothers Day is on Monday so the kids
will not have school either. then teachers day is on the 15Th which is a Sat. so they will either get Fri or Mon off for there day. To many days off
for the kids. Not learning enough. Kids love it parents not so much.
Cinco de Mayo is a U.S. party marketing thing only.

Rosarito is Quiet on Cinco de Mayo Afternoon
No banners or activity around the Rosarito Beach Hotel or the Festival Hotel.
Not much traffic and lots of school kids in uniforms on the street and/or getting into buses.

Today on Cinco de Mayo I met Toneart at Mama Espinoza´s and took him to meet Mama. We had a very nice visit and I found Tony to be a very nice person
even though he does not agree with me politically.
