Punta Abreojos

I'm looking to be in or near Abreojos mid-June, and was wondering if anybody knew of the truck camping options or campgrounds nearby(also how much$)? I asked a similar post not too long ago, and i remember Campo Rene came up. Isn't that place just cabinas?

Campo Rene used to have a web site. but I can't find it.

Palapas are available for Campers. Don't know the current cost. They are nice. Showers available

Beach camping is available up and down the entire coast. Depends on what you want.

June can be Fly season so be prepared

If you want mroe info, I can get someone to tell me more, BajaBlanca

Thanks for the quick replies, and I will have to check out La Bocana for sure. :)

I've got plenty of time, so I'm trying to maximize my cash by crashing in my camper shell-any additional info would be awesome, thanks!

Fly season? I can't stand flying bugs. There are NONE where I live and when I go someplace that has them it drives me nuts.

Tell me more about the Viscaino fly season. I've been thinking about going camping there this summer.

flys definitely suck. I heard there's some major mini rats in the area that come scurrying around right at dusk as well. I'm Probably will need my slingshot as well as a screen room.

Stay away... The warm weather and the beach combined seems to attact monsters. It starts in June and by August there are swarms. We call the "cling-ons" because welll.....

Dianat and Shari swears they stay south by Abreojos so you might want to try up there.

and yes the mice are even worse

Don't know anything about the flying bugs but we have camped at Campo Rene several times. Good food and bar, hot showers and clean bathrooms. Camping there is cheap, probably less than $10 a day, don't remember for sure. There are lots of places to camp along the coast between Abreojos and Campo Rene, just take the single track roads toward the water and go exploring. If you want to save a buck you can camp primitave and stay 1 night at CR to shower, have a drink and dinner.

Is Rene open? Can't find website. I was there twice and really enjoyed myself. We escaped the heat in Mulege in August '08. Went back to the gulf and beat it right back to Rene in a few days. Was 104 in Mulege and about 72 on the Pacific. Magificent surf break on the way to town but we didn't have our boards.

I have never experienced flies like I did at Abreojos last summer...swarms would be an understatement...more like an out and out attack! We did find some dead dolphins up the point which may have been the source that year but Abre has always had flies, and folks usually said they were from the dump. We stayed several days though because the nights were stellar and the surf was great...just have to have a screened room to hole up in during the day.
Asuncion didn't have any fly problem at all, it was beautiful there.

I don't think it is the dump... All towns have dumps. Seems to be mainly coming from the beach. Maybe combination of warm air and the sea weed/trash. only occurs in the summer. Oh man when a red tide hits!

You'll LOVE this trip!

It is Central Baja Coast at its most beautiful and pristine.

Bring a kayak to explore the loooong estuary between Abreojos and La Bocana.
Its protected by a seaward sandspit and is brimming with raparian life.

Stop and meet Blanca in La Bocana.
She has a beautiful place at the far north end of town.

Find Shari's in-laws in San Hipolito, an authentic village along your way.
You'll find charming, friendly folks there.

Between there and Asuncion there are numerous sanddunes and more sweet secret spots to explore.

Of course you'll see Shari & Juan in Asuncion!

In Abreojos be sure to lower your tire pressure way down low for the off-road sand and gravel driving and leave them down until you get back out to Mex-1 in Viscaino where you can quickly bring them back up to highway volume at the Pemex station (one north and one south of town).

Oh, and bring your camera and post your trip report with pix.
I just did the trip and kicked myself the whole time for being CWC (Caught Without Camera)!

A screen room is definitely a must at Abreojos. But the beach is beautiful, the surf is fantastic and the flies are truly just an annoyance. Yes, there are a lot of them, swarms, even, but just do like my daughter did, and make friends with them :) As for the "mini-rats" sounds like you read a review on WannaSurf ...we didn't experience them, but that certainly doesn't mean that they don't exist. Have fun!
