fishing reports
Is there a good site to get weekly fishing reports for the length of Baja? The site I used to go to seems to be defunct.

Western Outdoor News is not covering Baja in any meaningful manner. Robin Wade posted here, told everyone how well she was going to cover it but it
has not happened. Gene Kira at Mexfish.com used to do a great job but when Western Outdoor News decided that he needed to stop posting and putting it
on WON too, he kinda pulled the plug so now we have a great vacuum. When Gene was running the show, I used to post a weekly column for the Santa
Rosalia area and did so faithfully, but now I see only a haphazard reporting and do not, at this point, wish to lend my name to such slipshod
reporting. Pam Bolles does a good job on Baja Big Fish Co about what is going on in Loreto, There are usually good reports from Cabo and the East
Cape, Bay of Los Angeles has their own website and you can get pretty good updates on what is happening there. But Santa Rosalia, Mag Bay, La Bocana,
Abreojos, Mulege, San Felipe, and all the others are only a guess.

Pescador, that is a really good piece of information.. speaks volumes about "Baja" and many issues folks have about many questions which relates to
this overall mix we get on the "condition" of Baja
Wish you could provide a bit more insight from your perspective, I would like to hear your thoughts, I'm sure a many more would too... about the drop
in this area

Hmmm. So I guess when I need a report I will just post the question in this forum about, "Fish report from Loreto needed". It is not really an issue
for me utnil we get ready to come down for our annual, 2 week, beach camping/fishing trip.

Pam Bolles of "Baja Big Fish" fame posts a very good Loreto report but it is usually done on a monthly basis. Mas o menos.

I had hoped that when WON screwed things up they would recover and actually improve things, but that is far from the case. So at this point, your
best bet is to just ask the question and be specific about the area. I have a fairly long list of people who send me e-mails when they are getting
ready to come down and I can bring them up to speed on what is happening, but I really miss looking at the weekly stuff in other areas. I really
liked Bill Erhardt's reports on Loreto and Mag Bay especially. Juanchy and Joaquin did a great job on reports at La Bocana, and there were great
reports coming out of BOLA. Thank goodness I do not have a subscription any more to WON or it would have been cancelled big time, but maybe most of
the subscribers fish the waters close to home.

As one who spent 13 years in the sportfishing industry I'll add a couple of things.
The entire soCal industry was very slow to embrace technology. Instead of embracing the new technology, the dealers and the publications completely
went on the defensive as far as the internet. There were dire warnings to vendors, if you sold to internet companies your products would be banned
from stores, etc.
Some of the folks at WON actually believed the internet was a flash in the pan. Even in the face of falling subscriptions, they remained on the
defensive, even in the early 2000's. Consequently, they've been behind the curve ever since. Had they been smart, they should have hired a
marketing/IT person, developed a website/message board and sold memberships. Anybody could read or post, but memberships got you discounts or
something. WON could have converted it's advertisers easily.

If anybody is interested in filing a report, you might try: http://www.fishreports.net/
I visit this site on a regular basis (Port San Luis-Morro Bay link on left hand side). This particular forum is very active and very informative.

Although they may seem a little crude, bloodydecks.com has a pretty good Baja fishing reports forum, updated often.

Fishing reports from Baja? On the east side, look out for gill nets. On the
west side, you've got the whole Pacific Ocean.

Cypress,
Still better fishing in the sea of Cortez than in the Louisiana/Alabama oil fields.

vandenberg, Yes. Comparing the the Sea of Cortez to a disaster area is appropriate.

My crew and I had excellent fishing off of Loreto last year. Dodo's and sailfish. It was really, really good.

Keep checking Terrafin north and south and you'll see part of the reason for change --- the cold upwelling spread east and is effecting the migration
of fish up up and into the gulf. Right now, with the cold stuff turning off the bait and the bite, knowledgeable locals change how they fish. They
can't buy or catch bait so they are running hard, in and out, with cedar plugs for tuna. The tuna don't mind the cold and are hungry as they have no
food. All the good fishermen I know look for and often find the flip side of bad conditions --- what's bad for some fish makes for perfect conditions
to catch another kind in the same general area. My pals caught 30 tuna recently (20 to 40 pounds) - legal limits inshore and off.

well it must be that time of the month because I practically stayed up all night so I could post an updated report. I'm trying to publish it every
two weeks because things haven't been changing more often than that and I'm busy as..). Then I had the waterkeeper conference in La Paz last week and
came home to my 3G internet antenna out of order. have to wait till thursday (jun17) for a new one but since you were in the shop and I suddenly got
it to start to work, I wrote and uploaded a report.
the short story is no hay dorado.
the best thing to do is follow Osprey's advice, change tactics, and don't box yourself up in expectations. you will set yourself up for a bad time if
you do that and there just ain't no time for having a bad time here. 1998 was a strong la nina after the strong el nino of 1997. fishing was much
like this so I guss we're due for another year like that as its been 12 years. We're having some of the best inshore fishing we've had in a long time
can't complain and the weather is great.

No dorado outside today, but there was a little variety with a sailfish, a yellowfin tuna, and this ambitious little striper that posed nicely at the
boat before I sent him on his way.....
